Per Diem Cardiac Sonographer-Research Specialist

Job Summary:

NYU Grossman School of Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Per Diem Cardiac Sonographer-Research to join our team. As a key member of our Division of Nephrology, you will be responsible for performing, measuring, and analyzing cardiac ultrasound testing for an NIH-funded study of cardiac function in outpatient hemodialysis patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide patient comfort and arrange equipment for procedures.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies according to established departmental procedures.
  • Interact with patients by identifying yourself and verifying their identity.
  • Explain procedures and equipment to patients clearly.
  • Provide patient privacy at all times.
  • Utilize patient charts to obtain pertinent history as necessary.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of normal and abnormal cardiac anatomy, cardiac hemodynamics, electrophysiology, and major disease processes of the cardiovascular system.
  • Perform, assess, and critique echocardiograms, deciding what is necessary for a complete diagnostic study.
  • Alert medical staff to abnormalities requiring immediate attention.
  • Assist cardiologists in the event of a cardiac emergency.
  • Compare present echocardiograms to previous studies to monitor changes in patient status.
  • Carry out assignments within a realistic time frame.
  • Document echocardiograms according to departmental procedures.
  • Enter, maintain, and record all pertinent data.
  • Inform physicians of changes in patient condition or vital signs.
  • Maintain equipment for proper function and safety.
  • Clean and prepare equipment for patient applications.
  • Sterilize equipment after each isolation patient and TEE study in accordance with nursing and departmental policy.
  • Notify managers or supervisors of any equipment breakdowns.

Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in a related field and completion of an accredited program in Ultrasound or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation required.
  • Maintain active registry status.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered or registry eligible to take the Registry exam (ARDMS) within 1 year of hire date.
  • Maintain active registry status.
