Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, supports the attainment of departmental objectives while adhering to established policies, procedures, quality, and safety standards. Complies with regulatory and accreditation requirements.Assists in generating necessary reports by gathering relevant data.Helps in the maintenance and troubleshooting of automated medication distribution systems, serving as a resource for nursing and pharmacy staff regarding the operation and management of medications within the automated framework.Assists pharmacists in processing medication orders and preparing intravenous (IV) solutions.Regularly checks inventory to ensure compliance with FDA regulations.Participates in training pharmacy technicians and other support staff to aid in the medication distribution process and ensure timely medication delivery.Under supervision, provides guidance to patients, families, and healthcare professionals on medication usage, including dosage, potential side effects, and formulation.Under supervision, prepares, labels, and packages medications and pharmaceutical products.Under supervision, guarantees the secure storage of controlled substances and narcotics.Under supervision, drafts clear and concise clinical summaries for use by nursing staff, medical personnel, and pharmacy.Upon demonstrating competency in research and patient care, collaborates with medical staff regarding the appropriate use of medications and pharmaceuticals.Upon demonstrating competency, applies patient-centered care principles while working with unit-based staff and medical personnel concerning prescriptions, orders, medication detailing, errors, adverse reactions, and patient feedback.Upon demonstrating competency to a preceptor, monitors medication therapy for suitability based on individual patient criteria and recommends alternative dosages or therapies when necessary.Engages in meetings and committees, representing the department and organization in community outreach initiatives.Contributes to multidisciplinary quality and service enhancement teams.Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Currently enrolled Pharm.D. student in an ACPE accredited pharmacy program.
Experience
- Less than 1 year and up to 6 months of experience in a hospital environment.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification from a national pharmacy technician certification program is required.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Maryland or eligible for a pharmacy student exemption from registration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency is preferred.
