Nashville Classical East commenced operations in July 2013, initially serving only Kindergarten. Nashville Classical's Resident Instructor Role

The Teaching Residency at Nashville Classical offers a structured pathway to certified teaching through a compensated resident year, mentorship from a lead instructor, reimbursement for teacher certification, and the chance to engage in meaningful work while enjoying the process with the Nashville Classical team.

Who is suitable for the Resident Instructor position?
Are you currently working with children but did not major in education? Perhaps you studied education but did not obtain your teaching license? Or are you considering a career transition to make a positive impact in your community as an educator? If any of these resonate with you, the Resident Instructor position may be a perfect fit.

In the First Year, Resident Instructors:

  • Collaborate closely with a Lead Mentor Instructor
  • Gradually take on increased teaching responsibilities, including mini-lessons, small group instruction, full lessons, and coverage duties
  • Enroll in a teacher licensure program at Austin Peay State University to obtain a teaching license
  • Internalize and implement shared curricula, including unit plans, lesson plans, and instructional materials
  • Execute school-wide systems for student culture
  • Maintain regular communication with families and participate in quarterly family events
  • Commit to a daily schedule
  • Engage in ongoing professional development
  • Participate in summer professional development
  • Dedicate efforts to fulfill the mission of Nashville Classical

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the Resident Instructor position should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree
  • A commitment to obtaining a Tennessee teaching license through graduate coursework
  • A minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA to qualify for the teacher residency program at Austin Peay State University
  • A cleared Criminal Background Check
  • Experience working with elementary or middle school students in diverse cultural and socioeconomic settings (highly preferred)

Teacher Licensure and Reimbursement

Nashville Classical collaborates with Austin Peay State University (APSU) to enable Resident Instructors to complete graduate coursework and secure a teaching license by the end of the first year in the program. The entire cost of the program is covered by NCCS and APSU.

Compensation and Benefits

Resident Instructors receive a base salary and tuition reimbursement. They can choose from several comprehensive medical plans and are eligible for full state retirement benefits. For further details, please consult the current Teacher Salary Scale and Benefits Summary, which outlines benefits available to residents and the salary scale for licensed lead instructors to which residents can advance in the second year of the program. The position operates on a 10-month schedule.

Nashville Classical also provides all employees with a MacBook computer, essential classroom supplies, and a discretionary budget for classroom expenditures.
