Job Summary

South Middlesex Opportu is seeking a highly skilled Financial Controller to lead our accounting operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the fiscal, accounting, and reporting functions, as well as budget preparation, invoicing, and tax filings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the operational and fiscal activities of the program/department, including staffing levels, budgets, and financial goals.
  • Recruit, manage, and develop the Accounts Receivable staff and Division Analyst team.
  • Prepare the agency Uniform Financial Report (UFR) annually and gather and evaluate contract performance measures and outcomes.
  • Plan, organize, and control financial policies for the Agency to control the receipts of revenue, expenditures of funds, and safeguarding of Agency assets.
  • Audit, improve, establish, and enforce Agency's existing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Plan, coordinate, and prepare for fiscal and compliance audits performed by the public accounting firm, governmental agencies, and third-party auditors.
  • Keep abreast of pertinent GAAP, standards, and regulations related to accounting issues/funders/etc of the Agency.
  • Design, recommend, and test financial internal control procedures and practices.
  • Manage all grant and contract accounting operations.
  • Ensure an accurate monthly trial balance and a fully reconciled quarterly trial balance that would meet audit requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation, compilation, and distribution of the monthly financial statements by preparing monthly journal entries and detailed budget to actual variance analysis for monthly close and balance sheet management.
  • Direct the analysis of the operating financial statements including variance analysis and benchmarking.
  • Assist the CFO in preparation of all Board reports and other reporting requirements of outside agencies and financial institutions.
  • Oversee risk management of Agency to ensure adequate coverage for property, liability, worker's compensation, benefit-related insurance, and other.
  • Maintain relationships with insurance agents and underwriters with regard to premiums, claims, and other insurance matters.
  • Assist Human Resources by overseeing fringe benefits costs and analysis.
  • Prepare Government survey reports.
  • Manage and maintain fixed assets schedule for the Agency, which includes detailed schedules of auto fleet.
  • Manage and maintain all operating and capital leases for property and equipment.
  • Provide technical expertise to Program Managers. Prepare budgets, revisions, monitoring, and forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with program/department, agency, and/or funder requirements, as well as, SMOC policies & procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client, employee, and agency information in accordance with federal and state laws and funder requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with 7-10 years of grants, contracts, nonprofit UFR, and audit experience. Masters in related field or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years accounting experience with experience in preparation of financial statements and tax returns or experience in fiscal audits for $25M+ organizations.
  • Experience in a nonprofit setting desired.
  • Excellent supervisory and computer skills required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Organizational Relationship:

  • Directly reports to CFO.
  • Direct reports of this position are Senior Division Analysts, Division Analysts, and A/R Clerk.
  • Indirect reports of this position are Junior Division Analysts.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs.
  • Ability to read, write, and enter data into a computer.
  • Ability to calculate numbers and interpret data.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Working Conditions:

Nights and weekends may be required during peak periods. As part of the responsibilities of this position, the Assistant Director of Accounting Operations will have direct or incidental contact with clients served by SMOC in various programs funded or administered through the Executive Office of Health and Human Services.
