Job Title: Federal Tax Manager

We are seeking an experienced professional to lead and manage all phases of U.S. federal tax audits at our headquarters in Franklin, TN. This role is critical in ensuring our compliance across various industries, including automotive, financing, and insurance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Audit Leadership: Lead and manage all stages of federal tax audits, including corporate income tax, employment tax, withholding tax, and excise tax audits.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive audit defense strategies in collaboration with tax compliance, planning teams, internal departments, and external advisors.
  • IRS Liaison: Serve as the main contact for IRS auditors, preparing and presenting clear explanations of tax positions and gathering relevant documentation from internal stakeholders.
  • Negotiation & Resolution: Assist in negotiating resolutions to tax controversies, working closely with IRS Appeals to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Research & Analysis: Collaborate with tax compliance and planning teams to research complex tax issues and build audit-ready files to substantiate the company's tax positions.
  • Financial Reporting: Work with the tax accounting team to ensure accurate reporting of uncertain tax positions in financial statements.
  • Project Management: Implement tools to organize and track audit progress, deadlines, and deliverables, ensuring timely communication with management and key stakeholders.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Build strong relationships with internal departments such as Accounting, Treasury, FP&A, IT, Legal, R&D, Purchasing, and HR to gather necessary information and prioritize requests.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay current on federal tax law changes and IRS audit procedures to ensure compliance and informed decision-making.
  • Ethical Standards: Uphold the highest ethical standards, promoting open communication and diversity within the tax organization.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; advanced degree or professional certification (CPA, LLM, JD, MBA, MA, MS) preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in federal tax audits, with direct experience working with the IRS.
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex tax issues clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with various internal stakeholders, showcasing finesse and people skills.
  • Proven experience managing IRS audits as a primary responsibility; experience in advising or consulting on IRS audits from a law or accounting firm is highly valued.
  • Ability to meet face-to-face with IRS agents and maintain control during meetings, ensuring effective communication and negotiation.
  • No travel required; this position does not involve direct people management, but candidates should be comfortable interacting with and managing deadlines for others' staff.
