Classified Positions/Special Education Assistant
Class Summary:
Under supervision, this role encompasses a range of educational support functions within a preschool/elementary, emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered, or self-contained setting. The individual will assist Special Education instructors in the development and execution of student Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), provide instructional support to individual students and small groups, and deliver necessary student care to facilitate effective learning experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
1. IEP Management:
Accurately enters student Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) into the designated computer system and generates student data files according to established protocols.
2. Classroom Preparation:
Prepares and organizes materials for classroom activities, locates necessary supplies, reproduces class notes and handouts, and maintains a clean and organized classroom environment.
3. Student Care:
Provides attendant care for students with moderate to severe disabilities and/or emotional disturbances throughout the school day, ensuring their safety and well-being during various activities.
4. Administrative Support:
Assists professional staff by managing administrative tasks such as typing, filing, and organizing materials for distribution, as well as maintaining attendance records and supporting screening and testing procedures for students referred for Special Education.
5. Instructional Assistance:
Collaborates with Special Education instructors to plan and implement student IEPs, providing instructional support to individuals and small groups while monitoring student progress.
6. Coordination of Meetings:
Assists in scheduling parent conferences and IEP meetings with professional staff, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
7. Additional Duties:
May be required to perform other administrative tasks as directed, including supervising student detentions and assisting with transportation to therapy sessions.
8. Communication:
May be directed by the supervising teacher to make necessary phone contacts regarding meetings, while ensuring that all programmatic communication flows through the teacher.
9. Other Responsibilities:
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the Highly Qualified criteria as defined by educational standards. This includes having a high school diploma or GED, along with one of the following:
- Two years of college (at least 48-semester hour credits);
- An Associate's degree or higher;
- Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist.
Previous experience in education, training, or related fields that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of this role is preferred. This may include at least six months of experience providing care in an emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered or self-contained environment.
Licensing Requirements:
A valid Alaska Driver's License is required.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this position include standing, walking, sitting, and the ability to assist students with mobility needs. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
