Position Overview: We are in search of a dedicated and skilled Clinical Advanced Practice Specialist (CAPS) to join our Neurosurgery division at Charleston Area Medical Center.

Candidate Profile: The successful applicant will possess a keen eye for detail and a positive demeanor, contributing to our collaborative team environment. The CAPS will engage with a diverse group of Neurosurgeons, Endovascular Neurosurgeons, and Orthopedic Spine Surgeons. Responsibilities will encompass outpatient clinic duties, surgical assistance, and hospital patient management.

Practice Environment: Our surgical practice offers a wide range of experiences, including both trauma and elective procedures within a hospital framework. While surgical experience is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibits leadership as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and advocate for patients. Engages in independent rounding or collaborates with physicians/surgeons, participating in interdisciplinary rounds as necessary.
  • Fosters a positive work atmosphere through effective communication, serving as a role model and mentor to staff. May act as the primary contact for hospital personnel.
  • Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to coordinate and manage patient care effectively.
  • Conducts safe and quality diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic procedures tailored to specific patient populations.
  • Provides surgical assistance as required, participating in trauma and elective neurosurgery, endovascular procedures, and orthopedic spine surgeries.
  • Performs functions independently or under delegated authority in accordance with established practice guidelines and protocols.
  • Conducts thorough health assessments, identifies health characteristics, formulates care plans, initiates interventions, and evaluates patient outcomes. Ensures accurate and timely documentation in medical records, including diagnoses and coding.

Educational Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree

- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program recognized by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or a Nurse Practitioner program.

Licensure and Certifications:

- Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) credential, licensed by the relevant state board, or Nurse Practitioner (NP-C) certification.

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
