Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Public Health Educator I to join our team at the Cherokee Nation. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and organizing health promotion programs for group and community needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess community needs for health education and health promotion
  • Obtain health-related data about social and cultural environments, growth and development factors, needs and interests
  • Employ or develop appropriate data-gathering information
  • Apply survey techniques to acquire health data
  • Investigate physical, social, emotional, and intellectual factors influencing health behaviors
  • Infer needs for health education based on obtained data
  • Determine priority areas of needs for health promotion program development
  • Submit required program reports and maintain records
  • Plan and conduct effective health education and health promotion programs for the community
  • Recruit community organizations, resource people, and potential participants for support and assistance in program planning
  • Communicate the need for the program to those whose cooperation will be essential
  • Seek ideas and opinions of those that will affect or be affected by the program
  • Develop a logical scope and sequence plan for a health education program
  • Formulate appropriate and measurable program objectives
  • Design educational programs consistent with specified program objectives
  • Select strategies best suited to the implementation of health promotion programs in a given setting
  • Formulate a wide range of educational techniques and methods
  • Determine the availability of information, personnel, time and equipment needed to implement the program for a given audience
  • Assess the relevance of existing program objectives to current needs
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of health education and health promotion programs in the community
  • Develop plans to assess achievement of program objectives
  • Establish a realistic scope of evaluation efforts
  • Select appropriate methods for evaluating program effectiveness
  • Carry out evaluation plans
  • Facilitate administration of the tests and activities specified in the plan
  • Analyze evaluation data
  • Interpret results of program evaluation
  • Infers implications from findings for future program planning
  • Recommend strategies for implementing results of evaluation
  • Coordinate provision of health education and health promotion resources
  • Develop a plan for coordinating health promotion services
  • Formulate modes of collaboration among internal and external entities
  • Organize in-service training for community members and other interested personnel
  • Identify gaps, overlaps, and duplications in the provision of collaborative health services
  • Suggest approaches for integrating health education within existing health programs
  • Develop plans for promoting collaborative efforts among health agencies and organizations with mutual interests
  • Act as a resource person in health education and health promotion issues for other internal and external contacts
  • Access principal online and other database health information resources
  • Establish effective consultative relationships with those requesting assistance in solving health-related problems
  • Interpret and respond to requests for health information
  • Employ a wide range of approaches in referring requesters to valid sources of health information
  • Select effective educational resource materials for dissemination
  • Assemble culturally relevant educational materials of value to the health of communities
  • Communicate health education and health promotion-related needs and concerns
  • Interpret concepts, purposes, and theories of health promotion
  • Predict the impact of societal value systems on health education programs
  • Utilize a wide range of techniques for communicating health promotion and health education information
  • Foster communication between health care providers and consumers
  • Act as a liaison between communities and clinics
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from a 4-year college or university in Education, Health Education, Nutrition, Public Health, Social Work; or six (6) years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • No additional experience required
  • Knowledge of Database software; Design software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating
  • Health Education Specialist certification preferred
  • Must have knowledge of Cherokee customs, language, and culture and be familiar with medical terminology
  • Must also have experience with computer databases, word processing and statistical and graphic design software
  • Must possess strong organizational, presentation, and public relations skills
  • Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for childcare
