Job Summary

Carle Health is seeking a highly skilled Wound/Hyperbaric Safety Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will provide expertise in the management of wound, ostomy, and skin care in our Wound Center. You will also provide consultation to acute care patient care units and contribute professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families.

Responsibilities
  • Provide wound, ostomy, and skin care management expertise in the Wound Center
  • Consult with acute care patient care units on wound, ostomy, and skin care management
  • Contribute professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families
  • Administer hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the hyperbaric physician
  • Assist with monoplace patient prep and provide technical expertise to physicians and staff
  • Process and maintain hyperbaric supplies and maintain equipment maintenance and inspection files
  • Call physicians/offices to clarify physician orders and document patient's response to interventions
  • Perform thorough and accurate patient assessments to evaluate patient's status, level of knowledge, and determine readiness for education
  • Plan and implement appropriate teaching strategies and assess patient's response
  • Consider special patient needs when delivering nursing care and evaluate patient/family cultural needs to promote comfort and compliance to prescribed regimens
  • Perform patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider's orders and hospital lab procedures/policies
  • Perform department data collection, post treatment follow-up calls, and quality reviews
  • Understand NFPA guidelines specific to hyperbaric chambers and provide effective and quality wound care education and documentation to ensure optimal level of care
  • Maintain knowledge of skin care, wound, and ostomy trends, standards, and education
  • Provide accurate patient education and discharge instructions and facilitate product evaluation for ostomy and wound/skin care products
  • Work collaboratively with staff nurses and utilize the nursing process by assessing the learner and teaching situations, formulating a plan for teaching, providing the education directly or by assisting other staff, and evaluating the teaching process
  • Timely document teaching efforts and outcomes and provide patient education and document patient care and any changes in patient's status thoroughly and accurately
  • Document patient/family education and assessment of patient/family learning and assess patients/family to desired educational method and include that delivery method in education
Requirements
  • 1-3 years of experience in medical/surgical clinical setting
  • Basic knowledge of wound, ostomy, and skin care management
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise and ability to function without direct supervision
  • English skills: advanced reading, writing, and oral skills
  • Ability to respond appropriately to customer/co-worker interaction and maintain confidential information
  • Ability to communicate only the facts to recipients or to decline to reveal information and project a professional, friendly, helpful demeanor
  • Basic computer knowledge: uses word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail application, and web browser
