Job Description

As a High School Physical Education Teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will cultivate a passion for an active lifestyle in every student.

Our PE instruction includes sports, team building exercises, and physical exercise, and is culturally-responsive and fast-paced.

We have built a community that encourages respect and hard work and celebrates students' academic and nonacademic achievements.

Our goal is for students to develop into strong teammates who are interested in and knowledgeable about healthy lifestyle habits.

Responsibilities
  • Create a safe and interactive environment where students feel empowered to engage in physical activity.
  • Develop students' physical fitness through team building activities, independent exercises, and structured sports and games.
  • Help students build healthy habits in mindset and physical activity.
  • Teach an engaging and culturally responsive PE curriculum that meets the needs of various types of learners in your class.

  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
  • Partner with students' families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs.
  • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values, and encourage student achievement.
  • Partner with your grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies.

Requirements
  • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
  • An expertise in high school education, physical education, sports science and management, kinesiology, physical fitness, or participation in collegiate athletics.
  • Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Teacher certification is not a prerequisite for consideration at Uncommon Schools in the state of NJ, but you do need to meet NJ state certification eligibility requirements.
