Role Summary:

We are in search of a Senior Systems Engineer who will take charge of the upkeep and management of both physical and virtual workstations, servers, and storage systems primarily based on Linux and other proprietary operating systems. This role entails configuring user access and ensuring system stability and security through both deployment and daily operations. A strong familiarity with Linux systems is essential, and the position may also involve providing support to end users. The engineer will regularly collaborate with developers to design and implement system improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct daily operational and maintenance tasks to guarantee the health and stability of systems, databases, and critical infrastructure components.
  • Manage RHEL, CentOS, and OEL 7/8 workstations and servers.
  • Oversee the VMWare environment.
  • Install, configure, and maintain Java Application Servers, Apache Web Servers, and Database Servers as necessary.
  • Monitor system performance and ensure adherence to security protocols.
  • Collaborate with the development team to implement and support client solutions.
  • Evaluate and test system performance.
  • Identify, document, and assist in implementing monitoring points with the Enterprise team.
  • Create detailed installation instructions and supporting documentation for system design deployments.
  • Develop and maintain custom scripts and stored procedures to automate repetitive tasks and enhance operational consistency.
  • Prepare for new product releases and assist with new initiatives and upgrades.
  • Ensure daily and weekly system backups and storage replication to cloud services are executed.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to users and fellow administrators.
  • Facilitate training and knowledge transfer to other engineers and operational staff.
  • Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating a commitment to teamwork.

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of progressive experience as a Systems Engineer in a high-availability environment.
  • Robust background in Linux administration (CentOS / RHEL / OEL 7/8) and proficiency in coding and scripting (PHP, Python, Perl, and/or Ruby), including patch management.
  • Strong technical problem-solving abilities and experience with IP networking and static routing (FTP, SSH, SMTP, DNS, HTTP/S, DHCP, Syslog).
  • Experience with automation and configuration management tools such as Puppet, Chef, or similar.
  • Familiarity with Firewalls (IPTABLES).
  • Experience with SNMP-based monitoring systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated problem solver with strong documentation skills to ensure timely resolution of issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Compensation and Benefits:

The anticipated compensation range for this role is between $107,000 and $145,000 annually, benchmarked within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This range is a good faith estimate that reflects various experience levels. Compensation at LCG is determined by multiple factors, including role, location, education, training, knowledge, skills, competencies, certifications, and work experience.
