The Police Chief serves at the discretion of the City Manager and is a vital member of the Executive Team. This role involves planning, directing, managing, and overseeing the functions and operations of the Police Services Department. The ideal candidate will possess a dynamic and seasoned background in law enforcement, showcasing strong leadership capabilities and a proven history of executing successful policing strategies. The individual will engage with key stakeholders to realize an ambitious and dynamic vision for the Police Services Department. As part of the City's Executive Team, the Police Chief will collaborate closely with the City Manager, elected officials, department heads, and the highly educated and engaged community. The Chief will be a committed public servant dedicated to the mission of providing top-tier law enforcement services to the community.

Role Overview

A combination of experience and training that would likely equip the candidate with the necessary knowledge and skills is required. A typical pathway to acquiring the knowledge and abilities would include: A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including four years in senior management and administrative roles. Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with major coursework in criminal justice, business administration, police science, or a related discipline. Graduation from the FBI National Academy and/or a command college is highly regarded. A master's degree in one of these fields is also preferred. Candidates must possess a valid California POST Management certificate and a valid Class C California Driver's License with a clean driving record.

Desirable Skills

Graduation from the FBI National Academy, command college, and a master's degree in a related field.

Compensation and Benefits

The City of Coronado offers a competitive compensation package. Salary is negotiable based on qualifications and experience. The current salary range for the Police Chief is $212,000 to $252,966.86 annually, accompanied by an excellent benefits package including CalPERS retirement.
