Job Summary

This position serves as a Health Technician and is assigned to the Veteran's Health Administration, VA Pacific Islands Health Care System, in the Primary Care Nursing Service.

ResponsibilitiesAdministrative Duties
  • Verify documents from portals (i.e., CPRS and JLV) and document findings.
  • Contact community providers after 14 days of appointment and request for notes.
  • Correctly identify records associated with specialty consults and retrieve notes as needed prior to PACT appointment.
  • Ensure that all electronic correspondence is sent to the correct destination, complying with HIPAA and Privacy Act Laws.
  • Examine medical records to ensure they contain pertinent information prior to Primary Care appointment; work collaboratively with the care team to ensure notes are complete.
  • Check CPRS to ensure documents have not already been scanned, avoiding document duplication.
  • Quality check of scanned images will be conducted by the document scanner at the time of scanning, including adjusting image resolution and reviewing positioning and legibility.
  • If an external document is illegible, the document scanner will indicate on the cover sheet and return to the originator of the scanning request.
  • If a document contains insufficient patient identifying information, the scanner will note this on the cover sheet and return to the originator of the scanning request.
  • Identify and index documents after verifying correct vendor and validity dates for the consult as needed.
  • Answer telephone calls to the clinic and direct telephone calls/messages to the appropriate service/teams.
  • Support the team and perform clerical duties (faxing and scanning).
  • Sort and deliver facsimile correspondence to digital folders.
  • Manage clinic schedules of PACT providers, including nurse clinic and ancillary providers.
  • Collect records to determine patient eligibility/entitlement to medical care and use appropriate data management and record-keeping skills and techniques.
  • File all medical record information and correspondence in patient records and ensure patient demographic information is accurate.
  • Review recall lists and ensure patients are appointed appropriately by AMSA.
  • Notify AMSA of the need to reappoint, cancel, and/or reschedule appointments as needed.
  • Provide cross-coverage in all primary care clinics as needed.
  • Attend and participate in team and staff meetings, huddles, and trainings.
  • Assist in the completion of patient visit encounters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Clinical Duties
  • Take vital signs, weight, and reason for visit.
  • Perform and transmit EKGs.
  • Provide patient teaching and self-management reinforcement.
  • Use a glucometer, including calibration.
  • Perform simple dressing changes.
  • Complete clinical reminders.
  • Clean and stock rooms between patients.
  • Complete and review patient documentation in CPRS and process orders within scope.
  • Possess knowledge of proper handling and pre-cleaning of reusable medical equipment.
  • Serve as the initial contact for patients seeking medical care.
  • Receive and direct patients and visitors and respond to routine inquiries.
  • Make appropriate referrals and consultations for provider review as indicated by clinical reminders requiring intervention and follow-up.
  • Scrub clinic schedules ahead of time to ensure seamless and efficient care.
  • Provide veteran health education and information, including verbal instruction, review of written education materials, and direct access to other education resources.
  • Direct patients to the location of services and other departments and escort when necessary.
  • Respond to patients by phone, secure messaging, or in-person, resolving issues and triaging to the appropriate team member.
  • Coordinate consultation requests, including instructing the patient on the consultation process, requisition of consultant's records, and tracking to ensure consultations are made timely and completed, as well as requesting renewal of consultation.
  • Perform CPR and first aid procedures in emergencies.
  • Adjust own assignment to assist in emergencies or unusual, unplanned situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time off per year, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid Federal holidays per year.

Benefits

After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full-time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
