About the Role:

We are seeking an exceptional Research Leader to join our team at The American Phytopathological Society (APS). This is a unique opportunity for a visionary leader to drive research excellence in agricultural sciences.

Job Summary:

The Associate Dean and Associate Director for Research will provide strategic leadership to enhance multi- and interdisciplinary research enterprises. This individual must possess a deep understanding of agricultural, natural resources, and human resilience research programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Goal Setting: Establish goals for relevant and effective research programs in consultation with senior management, department chairpersons, county administrators, faculty, and clientele. Approve, monitor, and evaluate research projects, coordinate interdepartmental and interdisciplinary projects, and integrate research policies, priorities, and programs.
  2. Liaison and Representation: Maintain liaison with the United States Department of Agriculture, coordinate CTAHR faculty participation in regional research projects, and represent APS regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  3. Resource Management: Coordinate on- and off-campus research centers, including plot and resource allocation, in consultation with department chairpersons, county administrators, and senior management. Act as the Responsible Official for the BSL2 Select Agent Laboratory.
  4. Grant Coordination: Coordinate grants, grant preparation workshops, identification of potential funding sources, and stimulate submission of grant applications for extramural funding. Develop and implement a faculty development program focusing on research faculty enhancement.
  5. Budget Development and Evaluation: Participate in budget development with senior management and contribute to faculty personnel evaluation (promotion, tenure, contract renewal).
  6. Committee Work: Serve on designated college, university, and national committees related to research programs. Serves on advisory committees of other agencies/groups as requested and considered beneficial for APS. Maintain close communications with agriculture, natural resource, and community organizations to identify research needs.
  7. Other Duties: Perform other duties as needed and delegated by senior management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in a discipline associated with CTAHR from an accredited college or university.
  2. Academic rank of professor or equivalent, or demonstrable record of comparable professional experience prior to appointment.
  3. Five years of experience in higher education management or equivalent research leadership experience.
  4. Demonstrated leadership at the department chair or higher administrative position in agriculture, natural resources, family, and consumer science or related sciences.
  5. Established record of research productivity and extramural funding suitable for tenure in a CTAHR department.
  6. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs with faculty and non-university collaborators.
  7. Excellent communication skills and interpersonal abilities, along with the ability to work in a strong team environment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Involvement in administrative activities of regional and national research organizations, scientific societies, or similar organizations.
  2. Demonstrable national and international reputation in their area of expertise.

Estimated Salary Range: $120,000 - $160,000 per annum.
