Position Overview

The Evening Custodial Supervisor acts as the working leader for a custodial team at an elementary school, overseeing a group of four or more custodians responsible for maintaining cleanliness and operational efficiency within the facility. This role includes ensuring that the school environment is consistently clean and well-maintained.

Key Responsibilities

The following outlines the primary duties associated with this position. This is not an exhaustive list of all tasks; additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
  • Assigns cleaning tasks to custodial team members and modifies assignments in response to absences due to illness or vacation; conducts quality assurance checks on completed work and directs re-cleaning as needed.
  • Procures custodial supplies from the Facilities Services department; adheres to guidelines for the safe use of chemicals and supplies.
  • Ensures that exterior maintenance tasks, such as lawn care, snow removal, shrub trimming, and litter collection, are executed by the daytime custodian or custodial team as required.
  • Manages personnel matters during the evening shift, escalating disciplinary or performance issues to the appropriate school administrator.
  • Guarantees the security of the school building and sets the security alarm at the end of the evening shift; conducts daily security checks when school is not in session.
  • When directed by the school administrator, provides supervision for community events held in the building.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and knowledge of cleaning practices.
  • Familiarity with methods, materials, and procedures utilized in custodial work, including the proper use and maintenance of custodial equipment.
  • Understanding of safe and effective practices for operating custodial equipment and performing custodial tasks.
  • Ability to train and evaluate the performance of custodial staff.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and maintaining routine documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

While performing the duties of this role, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods; use hands to handle or manipulate objects or tools; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to see, speak, and hear. Occasionally, the employee may need to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend, climb a ladder, and may be required to lift up to approximately 50 pounds. Exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and loud noises may occur.
