Job Summary

The Principal Engineer, Major Projects will be responsible for overseeing the annual State of Good Repair (SGR) program at Metrolink, including preliminary project planning phases, design, and construction of funded projects. This role will also support grants funded outside of the annual budget process and new capital projects incorporating SGR improvements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight for SGR program inspections, condition ratings, and asset management system rehabilitation programming.
  • Serve as project manager and subject matter expert for major SGR projects and other major projects.
  • Act as Metrolink's FRA 237 Bridge Engineer, overseeing QC/QA program for structures and reporting findings to Bridge Management Program stakeholders.
  • Review and approve load rating reports and participate in review and coordination of Railroad High-Wide Heavy Load movements.
  • Manage SCRRA's Project Management and Construction Management consultant contracts, job order contracts, and construction contracts.
  • Oversee delivery of SGR projects, coordinating with Principal Engineer of Design and Construction.
  • Ensure internal and external projects meet requirements and expectations for scope, schedule, budget, functional quality, and safety.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 8 years of total experience with a Bachelor's Degree or 6 years of experience with a Master's degree.
  • Minimum 3 years' design or construction experience with a Commuter/Passenger or Class 1 Freight Railroad or as a consultant or contractor.
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant and progressively increasing experience in construction or engineering.
  • California Professional Engineers License (Civil) or ability to obtain within 12 months.
Preferred Qualifications
  • FRA's Bridge Management Program requirements.
  • Public sector and SCRRA knowledge.
  • Principles and practices of civil engineering, including design, construction, and maintenance requirements in an active railroad environment.
