Position: Middle School Science Educator

Schedule: Monday - Thursday

Summary: The Science Educator is responsible for overseeing students in the classroom and throughout the school premises during instructional hours. This role involves designing and implementing lesson plans that adhere to state educational standards. The educator will collect, document, and evaluate academic performance data throughout the academic year. Collaboration with fellow educators to align lesson plans is essential. Regular communication with families regarding students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development is also a key responsibility. The educator will uphold the mission, vision, and values of Charlotte Secondary School.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver a comprehensive education that meets all academic standards for the assigned courses.
  • Establish a culture of high behavioral expectations.
  • Teach courses as assigned by the principal/supervisor, including specialized subjects such as science, math, and literacy, as well as electives focused on humanities and real-world skills.
  • Utilize effective teaching strategies that foster critical, creative, and evaluative thinking among students.
  • Engage in professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Develop course objectives and outlines in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
  • Guide the learning process to achieve standards-based instruction aligned with state goals.
  • Clearly communicate lesson objectives to students and prepare lesson plans for substitute educators.
  • Instruct students in various formats: whole class, small groups, and individual sessions, employing diverse instructional methods.
  • Create and implement differentiated lessons to cater to the diverse academic needs of all students.
  • Assist in establishing classroom rules consistent with school policies and maintain effective classroom management.
  • Schedule and conduct meetings with families to discuss students' academic and behavioral needs.
  • Prepare classroom materials and environments for instructional activities.
  • Regularly observe and assess students' performance, behavior, and social development.
  • Provide tutoring sessions for students requiring additional support.
  • Design, administer, and evaluate assessments to measure student progress.
  • Assign and grade classwork and homework.
  • Collaborate with families, staff, and administrators to address student-related issues.
  • Lead students through safety drills and administer state exams according to regulations.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings, including staff and professional development sessions.
  • Maintain accurate records, including intervention plans and IEPs.
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, and recess.
  • Cover classes for absent colleagues as needed.
  • Fulfill daily assigned duties, such as lunch supervision.
  • Evaluate students' effectiveness and strive for continuous professional improvement.
  • Implement differentiated instructional strategies that reflect students' diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Adhere to intervention plans and IEPs.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education (mandatory)
  • Master's Degree in Education or a related field (preferred)
  • NC State Licensure in the relevant content area required (or current enrollment in a certification program).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
  • Understanding of the North Carolina Testing Program regarding End of Course Testing.
  • Ability to provide instruction that incorporates multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
  • Proficiency in integrating technology into the curriculum.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with administration, staff, families, and community members.
  • Basic computer skills and reporting capabilities.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines consistently.
  • Ability to analyze student work and adapt instruction accordingly.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
