Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at VCU Health. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our ophthalmology team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmology examinations by dilating pupils, changing visual acuity, and communicating results to the attending physician.
  • Perform complete ophthalmic history and preliminary exams, sub-specialty testing, and maintain equipment to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Accurately record all information in the EMR system and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Counsel patients on the use of drops, contact lenses, and other eye care products.
  • Perform routine vision screening examinations and administer eye medications as needed.
  • Assist physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and secure work environment by following established policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in optometric/ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
  • Successful completion of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Ophthalmic Medical Assisting Course within 12 months.
  • Obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO) within 24 months of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification.
  • Previous experience in an academic healthcare environment.
