About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Physician Assistant to join our cardiothoracic surgery team at U of L Physicians.

As a highly specialized Physician Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and assisting surgeons during complex thoracic and cardiovascular operations.

The ideal candidate will possess advanced medical knowledge, clinical and technical competency, sound clinical judgment, and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist surgeons during cardiothoracic procedures, including emergency situations, with versatility and competency.
  • Anticipate and meet the needs of the surgical team, ensuring seamless procedural execution.
  • Drain patients within surgeon-guided parameters, maintaining hemostasis through direct pressure, surgical instruments, and chemical agents.
  • Retract tissues per surgeon's directive, utilizing electrocautery, clamps, ligation, and tissue cutting techniques.
  • Place drains and drainage sutures, close wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous, skin) according to surgeon's instructions.
  • Procure saphenous vein and/or radial artery for use as conduits, preparing them with clips, ties, or sutures.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs, anesthesia levels, and physiological responses throughout procedures.
  • Closure of all surgical sites and application of dressings, adhering to aseptic technique.
  • Maintain knowledge of CPR, open cardiac massage, and other procedures as requested.
  • Obtain necessary CEUs to maintain certification, complying with company policies and HIPAA requirements.
Qualifications and Requirements

We require:

  • A valid Physician Assistant license in Kentucky.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accreditation by the American Heart Association (AHA) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
