Middle River, United States ECO Magazine Full time
Chesapeake Bay Fisheries Monitoring Specialist

ECO Magazine is seeking two part-time Fisheries Monitoring Specialists to oversee daily charter boat harvest activities on the Chesapeake Bay. This role is essential for supporting an electronic harvest reporting initiative for Maryland's fisheries. Monitors will be tasked with engaging charter boat captains at the dock to confirm the species and quantities harvested during the unloading process.

Position Overview: Monitors are expected to operate independently to conduct spot checks at various charter boat landing sites throughout the charter season. Participation in training sessions to understand harvest documentation protocols is required. Monitors will receive tablet devices equipped with software for scheduling inspections and recording monitored harvest data.

Work Schedule: The monitoring activities will occur throughout the week, with shifts lasting four hours for three to four days weekly, totaling approximately 12 shifts monthly.

Compensation Details: Monitors will receive payment for four-hour shifts at a rate of $15 per hour. Mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with Maryland's State mileage reimbursement policy.

Work Locations: Monitors will be hired in proximity to key areas of the Chesapeake Bay, including:

  • The northwest section of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, with landings primarily from Middle River to Annapolis.
  • The northeast section of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, covering landings from Kent Island to Rock Hall.
Qualifications:
  • Access to reliable transportation for monitoring duties.
  • Strong communication and interviewing skills, with the ability to manage challenging interpersonal situations while maintaining professionalism.
  • Adherence to Covid-19 safety measures.
  • Capability to work autonomously to intercept daily fishery offload activities.
  • Understanding of Maryland Chesapeake Bay fisheries, target species, and relevant terminology, including the ability to quickly identify fish species during inspections (training will be provided).
  • Proficiency with tablet devices and data collection applications, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent weekly schedule and coordinate with project supervisors.
  • Willingness to travel to other Chesapeake Bay regions if necessary.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Essential Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Reliable transportation for travel to harvest offload sites.
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to harvest reporting standards and data collection methods.

Fisheries monitoring serves as an independent verification process for charter boat harvests, and qualified monitors should not have affiliations with Maryland's commercial fishing sector.
