POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer and Technology Director, the Lead Broadcast Systems Engineer is responsible for a range of intricate and specialized tasks related to television broadcasting RF transmitters and systems. This role encompasses the implementation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of broadcast systems, software, equipment, and associated technologies at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The work is diverse, utilizing established protocols that require sound judgment and decision-making, including overseeing and delegating tasks to other specialists.
The supervision provided is generally broad, allowing for independent work while consulting the supervisor for unusual circumstances.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
RF Broadcasting:
Responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of television broadcast RF transmitter systems, networks, automation systems, storage solutions, servers, digital asset management, traffic systems, and digital video and audio editing and encoding systems, along with other related equipment and software.
Conducts maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of core television broadcast RF transmitter systems, manages tower sites, and oversees satellite uplink maintenance.
Software Management and Administration:
Oversees and maintains editing workstations, servers, digital library archives, and all relevant production software to support the programming initiatives.
Develops, modifies, troubleshoots, and implements software solutions for television broadcast equipment and systems.Digital Platform Management:
Executes the technical implementation of internet video/audio/data distribution, including streaming, webcasting, podcasting, datacasting, and other emerging media distribution platforms.
Support and Training:
Upholds technical standards for audio, video, and RF systems across the organization. Provides technical assistance to users of equipment and systems and supervises staff training.
Implements workflows, provides facility documentation, and collaborates with production instructors to enhance learning opportunities and recommends RF systems equipment for educational settings.
Collaborative Teamwork:
Fosters, maintains, and enhances positive working relationships with internal teams, including producers, writers, videographers, and editors.
Ethics and Confidentiality:
Demonstrates integrity by adhering to strong moral and ethical principles, ensuring truthfulness and accuracy in all professional actions.
Continuous Learning and Professional Development:
Keeps abreast of best practices and industry standards regarding technological advancements, procedures, and software related to television broadcasting, non-linear editing, and RF equipment systems.
Actively engages in relevant workgroups, training sessions, workshops, seminars, committees, and professional associations to promote ongoing learning.
Additional Duties:
Performs other related responsibilities as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support organizational objectives.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Possesses a working knowledge of integrating broadcast maintenance with digital video, audio, equipment, and systems, as well as principles and techniques relevant to a broadcast television environment.
Experience with relevant programming languages and scripting related to television broadcast IT, along with familiarity with Auto-Cad/Vid-Cad or similar documentation software is preferred.
Knowledge of network transmission methods and communication protocols is essential.Ability to perform system administration and management tasks for both physical and virtual systems.
Capability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
Knowledge in the following areas:
VDI, Microsoft OS Servers, Active Directory, management of network infrastructure, data storage, and backup systems.
Familiarity with broadcast television engineering and production workflows, including professional industry editing systems, as well as knowledge of FCC and broadcast technical standards.
Ability to rapidly learn new systems and processes.
Ability to work independently on multiple projects, meet deadlines, and coordinate activities to achieve desired outcomes.
Effective communication skills for addressing sensitive issues through both oral and written means, and the ability to establish productive working relationships with various stakeholders.
Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and demands.Strong self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Required Education:
Experience: Associate's degree in television broadcast RF transmitters, TV engineering, or a related field, coupled with five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in television broadcast IT/TV engineering functions; or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Education Experience:
Bachelor's degree in television broadcast RF transmitters, TV engineering, or a related field, with a preference for seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible experience in television broadcast IT/TV engineering functions; or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Licensure/Certification:
Relevant SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers) certifications and/or RF transmitter certifications.
