Electrical Systems Specialist

This position is responsible for operating, maintaining, and supporting critical facilities electrical infrastructure for mission-critical systems, including power, distribution, and controls systems. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Plant Engineering Manager, interacting with internal support teams and local contractors and vendors to ensure high availability and reliability within operations.
Key Responsibilities- Facilitate plant automation projects and initiatives
- Coordinate modifications to programming, wiring, and integration to new or existing equipment
- Provide applied electrical technical expertise in design, review, layout, installation, and operation
- Maintain automation library and plant electrical standards
- Work with Maintenance Planner to schedule and perform automation preventative maintenance and calibrations
- Collaborate with plant personnel to track and reduce downtime
- Optimize and maintain automation inventory with plant and contractor personnel
- Investigate opportunities for plant technological innovations
- Ensure critical facility electrical systems and programming problems are identified and repaired expeditiously
- Ensure contractors deliver quality services and internal customers' requests are met in a timely manner
- Monitor electrical systems and associated electrical apparatus used in the plant, including transformers, switchgear, panels, UPS systems, PLCs, power monitoring systems, and instrumentation
- Create and read ladder logic and flow diagrams for program design, startup, simulation, and testing
- Prepare test procedures and debug programs
- Design, coordinate, troubleshoot, and support PLCs, HMI/SCADA systems, communications, and databases
- Configure desktop operator workstations and develop process control flow diagrams
- Develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and specify and support motors, motor starters, VFDs, and servos
- Coordinate and assist with control system start-up and commissioning
- Provide technical support to plant operations personnel and develop technical documentation, training manuals, standard operating procedures, and job safety analysis
- Conduct training classes for system users
- Two-year technical degree in electrical technology or related field required
- Knowledge of process control principles, standards, and practices
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience with PLCs, instrumentation, and servos
- Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of programming, analysis, and design
- Ability to perform real-time process software programming of PLCs
- Working knowledge of desktop software configuration, networking, and communications protocols
- Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work independently
- Ability to communicate effectively and develop rapport with internal and external customers
- Understanding of electrical control systems and switchgear
- Ability to troubleshoot using diagnostic tools, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and megometers
- PC-based computer literacy
- Comprehension and use of technical vendor manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Electrical control and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Instrumentation (temperature, pressure, etc.)
- Pneumatics
- Motors/Drives/Gearboxes/Power Transmission Systems
- Print reading and ability to understand Process Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs)
- Ability to read and prepare wiring diagrams and blueprints
- Use of tools, including precision, hand, and powered
- Consistently identify, track, and resolve enhancements to work procedures or methods
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment
- Ability to train others
- Ability to problem solve
- Requires being available to respond to emergency situations as they arise

- Expert knowledge in industrial/commercial safety best practices: lockout/tagout, arc flash protections, OSHA, and state regulations
Position works in a manufacturing environment. Job incumbent must be able to work in areas that are hot or cold, surfaces may be slippery, climb ladders/stairs. Ability to lift 20 pounds occasionally. Training and improvement initiatives may require candidate to travel via automobile or aircraft. Candidate must be able to work a flexible work schedule including some nights and weekends, depending on the demands of the business.
