Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting clinical analyses in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician is expected to identify abnormal critical values and adhere to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, the role involves clerical duties, general tasks, and phlebotomy related to the laboratory's daily functions. The technician will also manage and dispense blood products as required by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the established OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Specimen Collection and Management – proficiently collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows protocols for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedure manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies discrepancies or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; communicates critical values according to Policy and Procedure; conducts tests within designated timeframes; performs laboratory analyses in the following areas: Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers in accordance with established guidelines.

• Quality Control – executes, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in compliance with Policy & Procedure, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; tracks and reports Performance Improvement indicators.

• Preventative Maintenance – carries out daily and periodic maintenance tasks with proper documentation; addresses minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; ensures reagents are dated and disposes of expired items.

• Professional Development – takes initiative for personal and professional growth and ongoing education.

• Training – assists in the orientation and training of new staff and students in laboratory practices.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – effectively utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems for performing, charging, and reporting laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience as per CLIA regulations. Candidates may also qualify if they have completed a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and currently hold the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist.
  • No prior experience is required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program. Alternatively, candidates may have six months of clinical laboratory experience, including rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids within the last five years.
  • State Licensure is required in Louisiana.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must achieve Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
