Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting clinical tests in various sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, which include quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks are performed to support daily laboratory operations. Blood products are provided and dispensed as requested by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:


• Upholds the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Demonstrates the company's philosophy and core values in service delivery to clients.

• Specimen Collection and Handling – proficiently obtains blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; manages pneumatic tube systems; adheres to procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the operation of various centrifuges; collects other designated patient specimens as outlined in procedure manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values according to established policies; conducts tests within specified timeframes; performs laboratory testing in designated sections such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established protocols.

• Quality Control – performs, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in accordance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; records performance improvement indicators and communicates results.

• Preventative Maintenance – carries out established daily and periodic maintenance tasks with proper documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Professional Development – takes initiative for personal growth and ongoing education.

• Training – assists in the training of new staff and students in laboratory practices.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations. This includes successful completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and current military occupational specialty as a medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician); OR 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours in science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND laboratory training that includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another organization recognized by HHS, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
  • No experience is required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other organizations recognized by HHS.OR Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following laboratory sections: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.
  • State Licensure is required in Louisiana.
  • New graduates who are Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
