Job Description:

As a Public Health Nurse I, you will play a critical role in promoting the health and well-being of communities across the state. Under the supervision of the Community Health Improvement Manager or Supervisor, you will use the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate public health nursing services in your assigned geographic area.

You will provide services to individuals, families, groups, and communities with health needs ranging from simple to complex, focusing on the promotion of optimum wellness and disease prevention. As a team leader for the DSHS staff in the community, you will coordinate the day-to-day operations of population-based services and direct clinic services, ensuring that program directives and Title V Maternal Child Health performance measures are met.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide public health nursing services to assigned communities, including community assessments, health needs identification, and strategy implementation.
  • Develop and implement community health education programs and materials, as well as action plans to meet selected Title V Maternal Child Health performance measures.
  • Establish and maintain communication and partnerships with stakeholders, including local/county officials, community leaders, other agencies, groups, healthcare providers, schools, and the general public.
  • Provide consultation, training, and technical assistance to healthcare providers, academia, and the community, representing DSHS on local coalitions/collaboratives.
  • Participate in local planning for community preparedness and respond to public health emergencies, including disease outbreaks and pandemics.
Requirements:
  • Licensed to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse in Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Texas Class C Driver License or equivalent from another state.
  • CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification.
  • At least one year of nursing experience, with community health or public health experience preferred.
Working Conditions:

This position requires safe operation of a state-owned, personal, or rental vehicle to conduct state business, and an acceptable driving record must be maintained. Complies with the Department of State Health Services Immunization Policy.
