CULTURAL EVENT SECURITY SPECIALIST

The Cultural Event Security Specialist will ensure top-notch customer service and security across the Seattle Art Museum, the Seattle Asian Art Museum, and the Olympic Sculpture Park during private events and museum programming. This role involves implementing security protocols to safeguard artwork, maintain the integrity of museum facilities, and ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

SECURITY EXPERIENCE NOT REQUIRED

The Seattle Art Museum offers FLEXIBLE scheduling, museum membership, and exclusive behind-the-scenes access to our remarkable exhibitions. Due to varying event demands, Cultural Event Security Specialists will have diverse working hours each week. Availability on weekends, including late nights, is essential. This position typically requires 10-15 hours per week, making it ideal for students or those seeking supplementary income.

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Security Supervisor

COMPENSATION: $21.68

BENEFITS: Part-time regular employees can enroll in our company's 403b plan. Employees accrue sick leave and vacation leave at a rate of .0385 per hour worked. There are twelve paid holidays and one floating holiday throughout the year, paid on a pro-rated basis reflective of the employee's average hours worked in the prior six weeks. Additional benefits include a subsidized transportation card, access to fitness facilities, and museum membership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Provide security for galleries, public spaces, meeting rooms, offices, storage areas, traffic corridors, and queues during events by patrolling and/or monitoring these areas. Control access to private event spaces within the museum. Ensure compliance with museum policies and procedures by patrons, vendors, and staff.
  2. Foster cooperative, respectful, and professional relationships with colleagues and volunteers. Strive to create a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment for all while ensuring safety and enjoyment within the museum.
  3. Monitor and assist visitors; address or report issues as necessary.
  4. Deliver superior customer service and utilize de-escalation techniques to prevent situations from escalating.
  5. Observe artwork for any changes; report issues to the supervisor for immediate attention.
  6. Collaborate with Visitor Experience, Membership, volunteers, and Venue Experience to enhance visitor engagement with museum information.
  7. Escort contracted workers and vendors through restricted areas, ensuring non-museum personnel remain within designated workspaces.
  8. Maintain familiarity with current policies, procedures, and security system operations to effectively protect art and ensure the safety of museum staff and visitors.
  9. Document incidents and notable events, responding to emergency assistance calls.
  10. Complete written incident reports detailing occurrences.
  11. Participate in training programs for emergency situations, including fire and earthquake evacuation, active shooter preparedness, and first aid. Be prepared to assist Security supervisors and others during emergencies.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  1. High School diploma or GED.
  2. Demonstrated customer service abilities.
  3. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; capable of conveying information effectively and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  4. Ability to prepare clear and accurate written incident reports.
  5. Capacity to exercise independent judgment and discretion in enforcing regulations.
  6. Reliability is essential.
  7. Ability to implement established policies and procedures for the security and safety of individuals, artwork, and museum facilities in a thorough and timely manner.
  8. Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic, event-driven environment.
  9. Attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  10. Capability to remain calm in stressful situations and effectively resolve customer complaints.
  11. Commitment to adhere to museum policies and support management decisions positively and professionally.
  12. Ability to pass and maintain security background check clearance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure: Work areas are primarily indoors, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Occasional work at other indoor and outdoor sites in various weather conditions.
Schedule: Availability for nights, weekends, and/or holidays is required. Work is part-time and variable based on museum events.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Stationary Work: Approximately 95% of the time is spent standing or moving throughout the work area. The remaining 5% is spent stationary at a desk. Long periods of standing are required.
Communication: Clear and effective communication with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and coworkers is necessary. Interaction with potentially hostile or abusive members of the public may occur.
Vision: Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary for effective use of computer screens.
Moving: Ability to move up to twenty pounds occasionally for files, equipment, and supplies. Must regularly position oneself to access files and ascend/descend stairs in high-rise buildings.
Office Work: Ability to effectively operate assigned equipment, including radios, flashlights, telephones, dispatch software, and other necessary tools.
