Job Summary

Duke University seeks a talented professional to join its team as an Assistant Director of Academic Success. This role is an opportunity to create and manage academic success programs at the undergraduate level, collaborating with campus and external partners to help students excel academically and strengthen their connections to faculty.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the ASCEND summer academic experience for incoming first-year students, recruiting, training, and supervising undergraduate coaches, maintaining student records and assessment data, and sustaining partnerships and collaborations with Duke offices.
  • Design and implement academic year programming for the ASCEND cohort, including the fall retreat.
  • Lead DukeLIFE STEM Tutoring, a program that provides private tutoring to students, recruiting Duke PhD students to tutor, identifying courses to support, and providing this information to program partners in the Academic Resource Center.
  • Deliver academic success programming to the LIFE Peer Mentors, Rubenstein Fellows, and student organizations.
  • Work with the DukeLIFE director to develop and implement departmental policies and processes for DukeLIFE grant opportunities.
  • Manage the enrichment funding process for the Gray scholarship recipients.
  • Manage the Course Materials Assistance Program.
Supervision
  • Supervise 2 full-time staff members through their ongoing professional development, goal setting, and effectiveness in their positions.
  • Design and deliver training to ASCEND coaches.
  • Provide mentorship and advisement to the ASCEND 1st year cohort.
  • Recruit and train student programming assistants.
Records, Assessment, and Reporting
  • Employ best practices and evidence-based approaches in the design of processes and programs that support students.
  • Track ASCEND program completion rates and analyze student progress throughout their time at Duke, making appropriate recommendations, and participating in short and long-range planning.
  • Engage undergraduate students and understand their needs for support.
  • Collaborate with the director on the design and implementation of assessment strategies to examine the impact of programming.
  • Write year-end reports on programming initiatives and contribute stewardship reports based on assessment data.
Stakeholder Relations and Partnerships
  • Maintain relationships with campus departments, programs, organizations, groups, and professional associations to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Act as liaison to other Duke offices, including various academic departments, the Academic Resource Center, Student Affairs, Admissions, Financial Aid, and other OUE units.
  • Serve on committees and advance the work of the office and of OUE as necessary.

The Assistant Director of Academic Success will be responsible for creating and managing academic success programs at the undergraduate level, collaborating with campus and external partners to help students excel academically and strengthen their connections to faculty. This role requires a talented professional with a strong background in academic program planning, development, and implementation, as well as experience in strategic planning and implementation. The ideal candidate will possess initiative skills, including curiosity, self-management, decisiveness, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and adaptability. They will also be proficient in writing and comfortable with public speaking and presentations. The Assistant Director of Academic Success will work in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple projects at one time, and will be able to serve as an advocate for individuals of all backgrounds.
