Under the guidance and oversight of a Registered Nurse, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) plays a vital role in assisting healthcare professionals by executing a range of supportive and technical tasks that enhance the safety, care, and comfort of patients and their families. This role involves providing both direct and indirect patient care, performing essential technical skills and procedures, managing routine administrative tasks, and contributing to the upkeep of the healthcare environment.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE CRITERIA

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory. Familiarity with healthcare terminology and relevant coursework is advantageous.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting is strongly preferred.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Safety:

  • Provide necessary assistance and monitor patients to prevent falls.
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Follow policies regarding patient restraints.
  • Conduct equipment checks as assigned and report any malfunctions promptly.
  • Set and verify equipment alarms as directed by the RN.
  • Participate in regular patient rounds, ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Respond promptly to patient call lights.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety protocols.

Patient Care:

  • Deliver care within the scope of responsibilities.
  • Assist with personal hygiene tasks, including bathing and grooming.
  • Monitor and report any changes in patient condition to the RN.

Nutrition:

  • Assist patients during meal times, ensuring comfort and hygiene.
  • Document food intake and provide hydration as needed.

Elimination Support:

  • Respond to patient needs for assistance with toileting.
  • Provide appropriate care for urinary devices.

Equipment Handling:

  • Utilize patient care equipment effectively and safely.
  • Perform technical procedures as required.

Data Management:

  • Accurately record vital signs and report any abnormalities.
  • Document patient care activities in accordance with established protocols.

Customer Engagement:

  • Exhibit professionalism and sensitivity in interactions with patients and families.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and respect privacy.

Administrative Support:

  • Assist with clerical tasks, including maintaining medical records.
  • Coordinate patient movements in collaboration with nursing staff.

Professional Development:

  • Adhere to dress code and maintain professional appearance.
  • Engage in ongoing training and development opportunities.
