Surgical Technologist Job Description

UVA Health System is seeking experienced and new graduate Surgical Technologists to join our award-winning interdisciplinary team within our 600+ bed Academic University Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Gather needed supplies and instrumentation for surgical procedures according to the surgeon preference card.
  • Maintain the sterile field and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Ensure adherence to aseptic technique by all team members.
  • Differentiate between sterile and unsterile items processed by various sterilization methods.
  • Review the surgeon preference card and case cart, gathering surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for general surgical procedures.
  • Provide safe patient care at a basic level.
  • Demonstrate principles of aseptic technique and sterile conscience.
  • Have basic knowledge of surgical procedures and patient anatomy.
  • Aware of environmental safety practices for patient, self, and team at all times.
  • Able to take specialty certification exam upon completion of accredited surgical technology program.

Requirements:

  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduated from accredited Surgical Technologist Training Program.
  • Current Registration with Virginia Board of Medicine required at the time of hire.
  • BLS required.
  • No experience required.

Physical Demands:

  • Standing for prolonged periods.
  • Repetitive motion: passing instruments, lifting heavy instrument sets.
  • Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull > 50 - 100lbs.
  • May be exposed to cold, radiation, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
