Position Overview
The Registered Nurse I is responsible for delivering exceptional patient care through the Nursing Process and a Relationship-Based Care model. This role involves providing direct patient care and proactively enhancing patient outcomes by incorporating Shared Leadership, Evidence-Based Practice, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical activities. The Registered Nurse I collaborates with patients, families, and colleagues to ensure quality care and meet both unit and organizational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Complete the necessary orientation and unit-specific competencies.
- Develop, implement, and revise the patient's care plan based on continuous assessment and family input.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members to facilitate effective patient care.
- Verify and execute physician orders, documenting interventions accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Engage with patients and families to create tailored educational plans.
- Recognize symptoms, prioritize care, and respond to evolving patient needs.
- Delegate appropriate tasks to support personnel in accordance with the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act.
- Uphold UI Health's values through teamwork and effective communication to achieve quality outcomes and maintain a safe environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Professional Development
- Advocate for patients, families, and the nursing profession.
- Integrate theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, and clinical experience to deliver high-quality patient care.
- Utilize approved tools for optimal staffing and patient assignments.
- Support Shared Leadership as the chosen governance model for nursing.
- Participate in departmental and organizational activities that align with unit goals.
- Demonstrate accountability for job performance by seeking opportunities for skill enhancement and maintaining licensure and certifications.
- Assume Charge Nurse responsibilities when designated, utilizing available resources effectively.
- Provide and receive constructive feedback within the healthcare team.
Organizational Responsibilities
- Adhere to UI Health's Code of Conduct.
- Treat all patients, families, staff, and visitors with respect and dignity.
- Follow nursing policies regarding time and attendance.
- Complete required electronic learning modules by the specified deadlines.
- Comply with health service requirements, including TB and flu compliance.
- Utilize established communication channels to address patient care issues.
- Identify and participate in resolving recurring clinical practice issues.
Education and Research
- Collaborate with fellow nurses to foster positive learning experiences for staff and students.
- Serve as a preceptor and resource for nursing staff and students.
- Access internal communication platforms for updates on policies and procedures.
- Support nursing and multidisciplinary research initiatives within the unit.
- Take responsibility for ongoing professional development by identifying learning needs and pursuing relevant strategies.
Reporting Structure
The Registered Nurse I operates independently within the nursing practice scope, receiving guidance and feedback from the Director/CNCII. Performance evaluations occur annually, with additional meetings as needed for coaching and mentorship.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements
- Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
- Current AHA BLS/CPR certification and other unit-specific credentials.
- Strong communication skills to foster therapeutic relationships.
- Intermediate computer skills with the ability to learn the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Excellent attendance and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Two or more years of experience with pediatric patients.
- Experience in an ambulatory care setting.
- Familiarity with craniofacial conditions.
- Experience working alongside surgeons.
