Position Overview

The Clinical Nurse I is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care through the application of the Nursing Process and a Relationship-Based Care model. This role involves direct patient interaction and a proactive approach to enhancing patient outcomes by incorporating Shared Leadership, Evidence-Based Practice, and nursing excellence standards into everyday clinical activities. By fostering therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, the Clinical Nurse I acts as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, ensuring quality care and meeting both unit and organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities


• Complete the mandatory orientation program and unit-specific competencies.


• Develop, implement, and revise the patient's care plan based on continuous assessment and family input.


• Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure effective patient care.


• Verify and execute orders from physicians and advanced practice providers, documenting all interventions accurately in the electronic medical record.


• Engage with patients and families to create tailored educational plans.


• Identify symptoms, prioritize care, and respond to the evolving needs of patients.


• Delegate appropriate tasks to support personnel in accordance with the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act, providing guidance and feedback.


• Uphold the values of the University of Illinois Chicago through teamwork and effective communication, aiming for optimal patient safety, satisfaction, and a therapeutic environment.


• Advocate for patients, families, and the nursing profession within the community.


• Integrate theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, and clinical experience to deliver quality patient care, adhering to established nursing standards.


• Utilize hospital-approved tools for staffing and scheduling to ensure optimal patient assignments.


• Support Shared Leadership as the preferred model of nursing governance.


• Participate in departmental and organizational activities, aligning daily behaviors with unit goals.


• Perform scrub functions, including the selection and management of instruments and supplies during procedures.


• Conduct circulating functions, monitoring and documenting patient conditions, and managing nursing care throughout the procedural process.


• Demonstrate accountability for job performance by seeking opportunities for skill enhancement and maintaining required certifications.


• Fulfill additional duties that ensure quality, safety, and efficiency in patient care.


• Assume the role of Charge Nurse when designated, utilizing available resources effectively.


• Provide and receive constructive feedback regarding team performance.


• Direct Patient Care may encompass services such as triage, medication administration, preventative screenings, and patient education.


• Assist healthcare providers during procedures and manage emergency situations, ensuring all necessary equipment and medications are readily available.


• Execute interventions to maintain patient wound care and overall health.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR certification and other unit-specific credentials.
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written) to foster therapeutic relationships.
  • Intermediate computer proficiency, with the ability to master the Electronic Health Record (EHR) through on-the-job training.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and interpersonal skills.
  • BSN from an accredited nursing program.
  • Current Illinois Professional Registered Nurse license.
  • One year of prior Operating Room experience.
  • ACLS/PALS certification within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nursing certification is preferred.
  • Proficient in EPIC.
  • Consistent excellent attendance.

Note: This position requires residency in Illinois within 180 days of hire.
