Job Description

Willamalane Park and Recreation District is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Leader to oversee the day-to-day operations of a recreation program site. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safety of school-age children participating in the program, planning and implementing recreational and educational activities, and maintaining positive relationships with community partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and monitor participant safety, including attendance taking, active supervision, and frequent head counts.
  • Maintain positive communication and relationships with community partners, including Springfield Public School staff.
  • Plan, schedule, and implement recreation activities, including guest speakers, arts and crafts, sports, games, educational activities, and special events.
  • Act as lead worker to Activity Leaders, including assigning and reviewing work, role modeling appropriate techniques and strategies for program implementation, coaching staff on Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS), and providing input to performance evaluations.
  • Request and organize supplies to maintain the recreation site, and occasionally purchase supplies.
  • Prepare, serve, and document meals and snacks as required.
  • Maintain appropriate records and prepare reports related to recreation programs and activities.
  • Handle disciplinary problems with children, including implementing and monitoring using Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) techniques.
  • Administer first aid and respond to emergencies as required.
  • Respond to questions, concerns, and/or complaints from parents, and keep them informed regarding their child's progress/achievements.
  • Report cases of suspected child abuse to supervisor and contact the Department of Human Services as necessary.
  • Prepare a monthly newsletter and maintain patron informational bulletin boards and areas.
  • Oversee and be responsible for the routine cleaning and sanitization of the recreation program site and supplies.
  • Drive a van.

Requirements:

  • High school graduation or equivalency and one year of experience in the care of school-age children in an ongoing group setting, such as a classroom, day care center, or recreation program.
  • Knowledge of behavior management of school-age children, planning and implementing recreational and educational activities for school-age children, and customer service.
  • Skills in the administration of basic first aid and CPR, leading activities for children, and communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Abilities to work successfully with children and parents, work independently, act calmly and effectively in emergency situations, deal effectively with behavioral problems of children, lead, assign, and review the work of others, and maintain records and prepare accurate reports.
