Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex carpentry, plumbing, and mechanical repair work, and more routine maintenance and repair on electrical and HVAC equipment.
  • Ensure environmentally safe working and business conditions in buildings and facilities.
  • Design and draw project plans for work to be completed, and read blueprints or other design drawings to determine work to be performed.
  • Perform building maintenance, renovations, and repair tasks, including removing or installing flooring and ceiling tiles, removing or installing fixtures and appliances, painting interior and exterior surfaces, removing or installing carpet, and performing general concrete work, plaster applications, and installation/replacement of sheetrock.
  • Construct wall framing, floor systems, roof decking and systems, and install trusses, and perform finish carpentry and woodworking to construct cabinets, work stations, ramps, and decks, and install counter tops, doors, windows, baseboards and moldings.
  • Supervise and instruct inmates, community service workers, other maintenance staff, and contractors in performing maintenance or repair duties, and ensure the safe and proper operation of trades tools and power equipment.
  • Perform various electrical tasks, including troubleshooting electrical problems, installing and replacing electrical wiring, receptacles, and switches, establishing electrical connections, repairing electrical components, tripping or replacing breaker, and replacing light bulbs and ballasts.
  • Perform various plumbing tasks, including troubleshooting plumbing problems, installing, repairing, and replacing pump-mechanical equipment and plumbing systems and fixtures, clearing and unblocking water lines and drains, repairing steam lines, toilets, sinks, faucets, drinking fountains, etc., soldering pipes, and repairing plumbing leaks.
  • Perform general maintenance and repairs to heating and air-conditioning systems, including installing or repairing duct systems, replacing filters, and assisting with the troubleshooting of heating and air-conditioning system problems.
  • Ensure that operation, construction, and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and systems are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards, and conduct maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs.
  • Operate or use various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments, and operate and maintain drills, saws, hammers, screwdrivers, channel locks, stud finder, painting tools, finishing tools, and other equipment.
  • Communicate with supervisor, other County employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Requirements
  • Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and five (5) years of related experience in commercial building construction, maintenance and repair, and/or Building Operator Certification (BOC).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
Physical Demands

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.

Work Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or bright/dim lights.
