About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Surgical Assistant to join our Cardiovascular & Thoracic team at Bon Secours Mercy Health. As a Surgical Assistant, you will play a critical role in preparing the surgical room, gathering patient and case-specific supplies and equipment, and assisting the surgeon during intra-operative procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare the surgical room and gather patient and case-specific supplies and equipment.
  • Assist the surgeon during intra-operative procedures, including providing exposure, retracting to expose anatomy, and controlling blood loss.
  • Implement plans for surgical interventions to meet identified patient outcomes.
  • Effectively communicate and exchange pertinent case and department information.
  • Promote a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Requirements
  • Certified in one of the following: Certified Surgical Assistant, The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or Certified Surgical First Assistant - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • Registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Assistant (if employed in Virginia).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (preferred upon hire).
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification (preferred upon hire).
  • 2 years' experience in an Operating Room (required).
  • Experience in cardiovascular and thoracic operating room (preferred).
