POSITION SUMMARY


To be fully engaged in delivering Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by employing sterile techniques to prepare surgical and delivery environments while assisting with various technical tasks, including support during surgical procedures and childbirth, as well as providing patient care and support activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.


PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Executes a range of responsibilities in an operating room/birthing suite, adhering to proper protocols by preparing spaces with necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
  • Establishes, maintains, and concludes sterile fields for surgical and delivery operations.
  • Handles and maintains all instruments and equipment with care, ensuring functionality and adequacy; reports any malfunctioning equipment as per established guidelines.
  • Complies with National Patient Safety Goals, Health First policies and procedures, Scope of Practice, AORN standards, and The Joint Commission recommendations.
  • Anticipates the requirements of the surgical team in the operating and birthing environments; collaborates with nursing staff to tailor care plans for each patient.
  • Shares the responsibility for on-call coverage for the surgical/birthing units, depending on the area of operation.
  • Contributes to efficient room turnover specific to the facility by assisting in the cleaning and organization of supplies.
  • Prepares and organizes materials and supplies according to patient needs, surgical procedures, and surgeon preferences in a cost-effective manner; monitors stock for expiration dates.
  • Exhibits a positive demeanor and provides exceptional service to patients and families, respecting their needs, expectations, age, cultural, and individual differences.
  • Demonstrates effective communication with other healthcare team members, fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Enhances the patient experience as evidenced by positive satisfaction scores and feedback, as well as consistent performance in purposeful hourly rounding and bedside shift reporting.
  • Exhibits the ability to perform all required duties in accordance with established procedures and completion of the skills checklist.
