Position Overview:

The ideal candidate for this position is a first-year student enrolled in a Pharmacy School.


Objective:

Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager and Director, along with oversight from the Staff Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Trainee will engage in a variety of tasks to assist in delivering pharmaceutical care to patients at UPMC. These services will be rendered in accordance with state and federal regulations, Joint Commission Standards, and the mission and policies of the hospital and its departments.

This internship offers a practical experience and a stimulating environment to progressively enhance both operational and clinical skills necessary for advancement in the pharmacy field.

Scheduling requirements are specific to the practice site and are determined by departmental needs. Intern shifts may include daytime, evening, weekend, and holiday hours. Detailed scheduling information will be discussed during the interview process.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the pharmacist in medication distribution, including delivering medications, replenishing automated dispensing cabinets, and managing emergency medication carts.
  • Assist in processing medication orders while maintaining patient profiles and performing prepackaging tasks.
  • Prepare IV admixtures, chemotherapy, and controlled substance orders.
  • Collaborate with the pharmacist in medication review, which includes computer order entry, monitoring allergies, enforcing formulary decisions, and assessing drug interactions.
  • Complete departmental documentation and billing accurately by the end of each scheduled shift, in line with departmental procedures. This includes dispensing and compounding records, refrigerator logs, hood-cleaning records, chemotherapy compounding records, patient/department billing, and controlled substance delivery records.
  • Where applicable, finalize clinical workload documentation (manual or electronic) by the end of each scheduled shift according to Department procedures.
  • Utilize information systems, robotics, and other applications effectively to prepare medication labels and assist with dispensing medications.
  • Exhibit a service-oriented approach in all interpersonal interactions, projecting a positive and professional image.
  • Prepare drug information responses and conduct medication use evaluations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked work environment.
  • Perform duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Must be in good standing at an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Must be entering the P1 year or above.
  • Must have applied for an intern license.
  • Strong communication and computer skills are essential.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy Intern Certificate is required.
