Job Title: Director of Equestrian Center

Job Summary:

The Director of Equestrian Center will oversee the daily operations of the Equestrian Center, ensuring the delivery of high-quality equestrian programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. This includes managing the Equestrian Center Management Team, preparing annual operating budgets, and coordinating with the Business Coordinator to manage record keeping and billing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct supervision of the Equestrian Center Management Team to ensure the successful achievement of the Equestrian Center Mission.

  • Prepare annual operating budgets and monitor expenses to ensure fiscal responsibility.

  • Work with the Business Coordinator to manage record keeping and billing, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.

  • Organize the development of structure, policies, and procedures of the Equestrian Center, assigning responsibilities for overall operations and supervising personnel to ensure consistency with the Equestrian Center philosophy and purpose.

  • Coordinate the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluations of all staff and programs, ensuring a high level of expertise and customer satisfaction.

  • Partner with the Stable Manager to hire and train stable staff and their scheduling, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.

  • Partner with the PE Program Manager to hire and train PE Riding Instructors, ensuring a high level of expertise and customer satisfaction.

  • Assist the Director of Intercollegiate Coaching in the efforts to recruit prospective students to Mount Holyoke College, promoting the Equestrian Center and its programs.

  • Work with the Stable Manager to assemble, evaluate, and maintain an appropriate number of safe and sound school horses, ensuring the needs of the instructional and intercollegiate programs are met.

  • Partner with the PE Program Manager and Stable Manager to develop and oversee a proactive safety program for riders and horses, ensuring a safe and healthy environment.

  • Partner with the Marketing and Events Manager to maintain the EC facility and grounds, including routine servicing and maintenance of indoor and outdoor arena surfaces, cross-country course, paddocks, and pastures, as well as repairs to the jumps and routine maintenance of track and other equipment.

  • Coordinate with the Marketing and Events Manager and Assistant Events Coordinator to oversee the development and publication of EC promotional materials and coordinate publicity activities, promoting the Equestrian Center and its programs.

  • Collaborate with the MHC Advancement team on fundraising initiatives, promoting the Equestrian Center and its programs.

  • Serve as a resource person and provide support for all riding and stable staff, ensuring a high level of expertise and customer satisfaction.

  • Attend monthly meetings of the Operational Policy Council, ensuring alignment with college policies and procedures.

  • Attend Athletics Staff meetings and designated Division of Student Life meetings, ensuring collaboration and communication with other departments.

  • Attend special events as necessary to promote the MHC Equestrian Center, ensuring visibility and awareness of the Equestrian Center and its programs.

  • Build relationships with prospective students and their families, current students, alums, and alongside the Advancement Team, potential donors, promoting the Equestrian Center and its programs.

  • Teach riding classes as part of the physical education program, ensuring a high level of expertise and customer satisfaction.

  • Be on-call for equine emergencies when the Stable Manager is unavailable, ensuring a safe and healthy environment.

Requirements:

  • Proven familiarity with multiple disciplines of riding – hunter seat equitation/jumpers/dressage/3 day eventing/western.

  • Proven budget management experience.

  • Ability to drive a truck and trailer is preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years of direct management experience.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a collegiate equestrian setting is preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the equine industry.

  • Minimum of 5 years of direct horse care experience, preferably in a national or international level environment.

Education Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.

License/Certifications:

  • CPR/AED certification required.

  • Valid driver's license required.

  • MA State Riding Instructor's License.

Working Conditions:

  • This position requires some night and weekend work.

  • This position requires working in all types of weather conditions, including snow and rain, varying temperature conditions, uneven terrain as well as non-improved surfaces.

  • This position may also require the Director to be on-call when the Stable Manager is unavailable.

Physical Demands:

  • Known equestrian hazards of working with large animals in differing environments, temperaments, and tight quarters are part of this job. Sometimes moving quickly, while maintaining balance is necessary.

  • Occasionally it may be necessary to have:

    • The ability to work on their feet for 4-8 hours per day.

    • The ability to lift a 55-pound hay bale overhead.

    • The ability to squat and lift a fully loaded 10-yard wheel barrow and push it up an incline to be dumped.

Stall Benefit:

  • The Director of the Equestrian Center receives the benefit of one stall at no cost to board their horse. The stall cannot be sublet.

  • Marketing and Events Manager.

  • Stable Manager.

  • Business Coordinator.
