In collaboration with the Director of Surgical Services and the Same-Day Surgery Manager, the Surgical Services Preparation Nurse plays a vital role in the department by gathering essential information, offering comfort, and delivering care to patients prior to their surgical procedures. This role requires a commitment to providing care that is tailored to the patient's developmental stage and is sensitive to cultural differences. The Preparation Nurse is tasked with developing a comprehensive care plan and evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions while maintaining effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team. Upholding professional nursing standards is paramount.

Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. If BLS certification is not current upon hiring, it must be obtained within three months. Additional certifications in PALS and ACLS are required within one year of employment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients' conditions, documenting findings, collaborating with the healthcare team, and developing a suitable peri-operative care plan that is adjusted as necessary based on patient condition changes.
- Administer basic nursing skills and treatments as directed by the physician or as indicated by the patient's condition, ensuring consistency and effectiveness.
- Welcome patients in the waiting area, escort them to the pre-operative area, assist them in changing into hospital gowns, and secure their personal belongings.
- Verify patients' personal and emergency contact information, as well as confirm the surgical procedure to be performed.
- Ensure patients have transportation arranged for post-surgery and review post-operative instructions, including recovery expectations and cautions regarding legal documents.
- Facilitate the signing of the operating room consent form and ensure patients understand the procedure and potential risks.
- Review and verify all necessary documentation, including the surgeon's history and pre-operative assessments, ensuring compliance with time constraints.
- Confirm that the surgical site is marked by the physician, if applicable.
- Initiate IV access and discuss anesthesia options with patients, including any known allergies.
- Review the surgeon's orders and surgical protocols, prepare initial antibiotics, and ensure the surgical area is prepped according to guidelines.
- Coordinate pre-surgical meetings between the Anesthesiologist and Surgeon with the patient.
- Deliver professional nursing care, including medication administration and monitoring of IVs and EKG rhythms as required.
- Utilize professional judgment in patient treatment and modify care plans or consult with physicians as necessary.
- Provide patients and their families with post-surgical care instructions to alleviate concerns and educate them during recovery.
- Maintain accurate records and charts of patient care, documenting pre-surgery conditions, medications administered, and treatments provided.
- Actively participate in departmental meetings and in-service training as required by the department leadership.
- Stay informed on advancements in nursing practices to ensure high-quality patient care.
- Assume responsibility for safety, infection control, and performance improvement initiatives as part of the organization's commitment to quality care.
- Present a professional demeanor to colleagues, medical staff, patients, and visitors.
- Engage in performance improvement activities and integrate these standards into patient care practices.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
