Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Director, Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Technician - Certified plays a vital role in the department, supporting the Pharmacy staff in the preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical products. This role involves assisting with prescriptions, delivering medications, answering phone calls, and stocking shelves. The technician is responsible for maintaining inventory of pharmacy supplies and submitting reorders as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist pharmacists in providing medication, drug information, and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Assist in filing prescriptions using unit dose medications and basic compounding.
  • Prepare intravenous solutions and admixtures using aseptic technique.
  • Perform dosage calculations, filling various prescriptions, including IV antibiotics and fluids for patients ranging in age from newborn to geriatric.
  • Process records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computing charges and entering them into the computer or forwarding them to the business office.
  • Maintain data, generate reports, and provide compiled information to other departments.
  • Receive and place supplies on shelves, tagging and pricing each item according to directions and process all related paperwork.
  • Manage and rotate inventory within the pharmacy and on nursing units.
  • Process patient charges for pharmaceuticals using the Pharmacy charging system.
  • Reconcile medication stores, including controlled substances.
  • Receive, inventory, and store patient home medications.
  • Maintain the Pharmacy in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Transport drugs and medications to the Nursing Home or other off-site locations, pick up or return drugs or medications from supplier locations as needed.
  • Function as part of an interdisciplinary team, promoting positive interpersonal communication skills when communicating with patients, families, visitors, physicians, and staff in other departments of the organization.
  • Comply with CRHS and department safety, infection control, and performance improvement initiatives and sterile procedures, ensuring the delivery of products and services.
  • Present a professional image to CRHS nursing and medical staff members.
  • Perform other related job duties as assigned.
Standards of Performance
  • Provide medication, drug information, and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Prepare pharmaceuticals for patients that are age-appropriate with consistent dosage variations for newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and know to consult with pharmacists when questions arise.
  • Prepare intravenous solutions and admixtures using aseptic techniques.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and reorder them accordingly.
  • Assist in filing prescriptions using unit dose medications and prepare compound pharmaceutical dosages as indicated by the prescriptions.
  • Comply with all standards of care, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate reliability as measured by compliance with the CRHS Time and Attendance policy.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and adherence to all safety, confidentiality, and HIPAA standards.
  • Promote teamwork with the entire staff as well as other contacts within the hospital, as measured by observations of Manager and co-workers.
  • Attend professional development programs and in-service training and meet the minimum requirement for continuing professional education.
  • Adhere to the CRHS Standards of Behavior as measured by observations of staff as well as outside and other inside customers.
  • Verbalize all core competencies of the unit and department.
  • Comply with all regulatory requirements, including the National Patient Safety Goals, as observed by peers, supervisor, and all members of the healthcare team.
