Museum Collections Specialist

Natchez, Mississippi, United States U.S. Department of the Interior Full time

Position Overview

This role is open to a diverse range of candidates, including current and former federal employees, veterans, individuals with disabilities, military spouses, and other eligible individuals.

Key Responsibilities

This is a career-seasonal position, which may involve periods of non-pay/non-duty status for a duration of 2 weeks to 6 months annually, depending on project needs or environmental conditions. Selected candidates are assured a minimum of 6 months of work each year, with a maximum of 50 weeks, and the work schedule will be established upon hiring. The typical operational season for the associated National Park is from March through October, although this may vary based on specific project requirements or weather-related factors.

The incumbent will function as a museum technician within a museum facility, tasked with executing a comprehensive range of intricate curatorial support activities.

The technician's duties are generally aligned with and supportive of a professional field, involving significant elements of professional work, albeit requiring less comprehensive knowledge of the field. This position is designed to report to a specialist or resource manager in the same or a related discipline. In instances where the incumbent is not directly supervised by a professional specialist (such as an archivist or curator), technical guidance must be sought from a specialist in a central office or center.

This position is differentiated from similar roles at the GS-06 level by the necessity for the incumbent to possess enhanced knowledge, experience, and judgment to manage a variety of conventional projects of limited scope. Responsibilities include independently resolving issues with established precedents, selecting the most suitable course of action from multiple alternatives, and applying a broad spectrum of conventional methods and solutions to new challenges. Consequently, this role has a wider scope and impact, directly influencing the design, operation, and effectiveness of cultural resource initiatives.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for male candidates.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is mandatory.
  • Candidates may be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of their official duties. Prior to operating a motor vehicle for the first time and annually thereafter, candidates must certify possession of a valid state-issued driver's license and submit a photocopy of the license.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Candidates may be required to work on-call, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Completion of training and maintenance of a government charge card for travel and/or purchase authority may be necessary.
  • Overnight travel away from home may be required.
  • An initial probationary period must be completed.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be fulfilled by the closing date of this announcement.

Relevant experience will be credited, including volunteer work through recognized service programs. Candidates must provide detailed information regarding hours worked to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

Experience: A minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in federal service, encompassing activities such as managing a museum or similar collection, collection management, cataloging, preservation, or conservation of museum materials.
-OR-
Education: Completion of at least one full academic year of relevant graduate-level education or demonstration of superior academic achievement.
-OR-
A combination of education and experience as described above, totaling at least 100 percent to qualify.

Volunteer Experience: All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be considered.

Candidates must include specific details regarding months, years, and hours worked to receive credit for experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, candidates must submit legible transcripts that include their name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and GPA or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official initially, but official transcripts will be required upon selection if education is used for qualification.

If foreign education is used to meet qualification requirements, candidates must provide evidence of evaluation by a recognized organization to determine equivalency to U.S. accredited education programs.
