Job Summary

As a Patient Navigator Bariatrics, you will play a vital role in coordinating the pre-surgery process for bariatric patients, ensuring seamless care and support throughout their journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive barrier assessments in four domains: health promotion, logistics, financial, and emotional and social support.
  • Navigate patients, families, and caregivers through the pre-surgery process, providing resources, education, advocacy, referral, and support.
  • Coordinate all insurance requirements, ensuring proper documentation is submitted to the insurance authorization team.
  • Facilitate 1:1 and group educational classes for patients throughout the pre-surgery process.
  • Collaborate effectively with the Bariatric Surgeon team to ensure patients are progressing with all pre-surgery requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers, building trust relationships and demonstrating empathy, integrity, honesty, compassion, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Empower patients, families, and caregivers to self-advocate and communicate well with the medical team.
  • Uphold diversity, equity, and inclusion in all interactions, identifying barriers created through gaps in health literacy and language discordance.
  • Properly document interventions in the electronic medical record and maintain data tracking as identified by the supervisor.
Requirements
  • Medical Assistant certification by a recognized organization (e.g., AAMA, AMT, CCMA, NRCMA, or NCMA).
  • Basic Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • At least two years' experience as a medical assistant, with at least one year of experience working with bariatric patients.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with detailed information and employ high-level problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong communication skills with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with providers, staff, and external organizations.
  • Demonstrates awareness and values cultural competency.
  • Proficient with Windows-based software, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Work Details

This is a full-time position with a standard 40-hour workweek. The salary range is $27.16 per hour, with pay offers determined by experience and internal equity.

This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Health Care System.
