DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a comprehensive laboratory system serving the eight hospitals within the Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, DMCUL encompasses Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, rapid response hospital laboratories, a Centralized Stat Lab, a Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and a robust outreach infrastructure, including patient service centers and remote laboratories.

Under general supervision and adhering to established protocols, the Histology Technician will:

• Receive and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens, including frozen sections and special study specimens for microscopic and pathological examination.
• Log and execute standard histological procedures such as embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping, and labeling of routine surgical and autopsy tissue specimens.
• Conduct advanced histotechniques in immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.
• Assist pathologists with gross dissection of tissue specimens, including setting up the workspace, instruments, and equipment, as well as preparing chemical reagents and solutions.
• Manage the filing and retrieval of slides, paraffin blocks, and surgical pathology reports, while preparing and correlating slides and reports for pathologist review.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring quality control and preventive maintenance, and restocking reagents as necessary.
• Participate in training fellow laboratory personnel and contribute to the development and implementation of new procedures and research initiatives.
• Assist the pathologist or designated personnel with medical photography tasks and perform other related duties as assigned.

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

1. A high school diploma with two years of histotechnology training, or
2. An Associate of Science degree or a specified number of college credit hours in science, along with one year of histotechnology training, or
3. A certificate from an accredited histotechnology program.
4. Registration as HTL (Histotechnologist), HT (Histotechnician), or registry eligibility through the ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) is required.
