About DMC University LaboratoriesDMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a comprehensive laboratory system serving the eight hospitals within the Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, DMCUL encompasses Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, and two rapid response hospital laboratories, among other facilities. Our service area spans the entire Southeast Michigan market, and we are expanding rapidly, offering a test menu of over 1,000 tests, including advanced specialty tests.
Role ResponsibilitiesUnder general supervision and adhering to established protocols, the Histology Technician will:
- Receive and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for microscopic and pathological examination.
- Log and execute standard histological procedures, including embedding, sectioning, staining, and labeling.
- Conduct advanced histotechniques in immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.
- Assist pathologists with gross dissection of tissue specimens, ensuring proper setup and preparation of chemical reagents.
- File and retrieve slides, paraffin blocks, and surgical pathology reports, correlating slides with surgical reports for pathologist review.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing quality control and preventive maintenance as needed.
- Participate in training laboratory personnel and contribute to the development and implementation of new procedures and research initiatives.
- Assist in medical photography tasks as required.
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A high school diploma accompanied by two years of histotechnology training, or
- An Associate of Science degree or equivalent college credits in science plus one year of histotechnology training, or
- A certificate from an accredited histotechnology program.
- Registration as HTL (Histotechnologist), HT (Histotechnician), or registry eligibility through the ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) is required.
