Position Overview: The Medical Office Technician plays a vital role in enhancing patient experiences within an outpatient clinic environment. This position encompasses both clinical and administrative responsibilities tailored to the needs of the practice.
Key Responsibilities:- Ensure a welcoming atmosphere for patients as they navigate through the clinic.
- Execute duties as outlined in the Health Administrative Assistant (HAA) job description.
- Fulfill responsibilities associated with the Clinical Assistant role as per the established guidelines.
- Conduct in-house testing using available equipment, adhering to documented training and competency standards.
- Maintain laboratory operations independently, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Collect patient specimens utilizing appropriate techniques and equipment.
- Confirm patient identity and order accuracy prior to specimen collection.
- Review relevant patient history to facilitate blood draw procedures.
- Determine the most suitable blood draw site, selecting the appropriate needle gauge and preparing the site accordingly.
- Adhere to universal precautions and safety protocols during specimen collection and processing.
- Prepare samples for transportation to reference laboratories, ensuring proper labeling and order matching.
- Communicate abnormal or critical test results to the designated healthcare provider or clinical team member.
- Perform cleaning, maintenance, quality control, and calibration of laboratory equipment, reporting any malfunctions as necessary.
- Keep the work area organized, clean, and adequately stocked, assisting with inventory management of laboratory supplies.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience: A minimum of one year of experience in a physician office laboratory is preferred.
Licensure and Certification: Phlebotomy certification is required upon hire or within the first year. Some practices may prefer certified nursing assistants. Additionally, obtaining federal drug screen collector credentials and federal breath alcohol technician certification within six months of hire is necessary.
Life Support Certification: AHA BLS-HCP certification is required within the first 90 days of employment.
Other Qualifications: Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills are essential. Attention to detail, dexterity, and organizational skills are critical. Proficiency in electronic medical records and familiarity with clinical and clerical procedures is preferred.
