Position Overview

The Principal Mechanical Engineer plays a pivotal role in steering the technical design of projects, serving as a subject matter expert, mentor, and key resource for the engineering team. This position involves delegating, leading, and overseeing the work of Project Engineers and Designers. The role is responsible for conceptualizing, executing, and ensuring quality throughout the design process to align with client needs and expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees the technical project workflow and scope of work within the mechanical discipline; reviews timelines and allocated hours; identifies and resolves inconsistencies in collaboration with project management.
  • Assigns tasks to project engineers and designers within the mechanical discipline as necessary.
  • Implements quality management processes; conducts project evaluations and approvals prior to all QA/QC assessments performed by the technical authority.
  • Maintains robust client relationships; adept at understanding and articulating project and design requirements, progress updates, and troubleshooting to clients and technical personnel.
  • Facilitates effective coordination with all disciplines to ensure comprehensive integration of work and client requests into the design.
  • Acts as a supervisor and resource for the technical design team; supports and promotes staff education and professional development.
  • Engages actively in the engineering and professional community to enhance personal knowledge and foster professional growth (e.g., attending meetings, seminars, conferences, and/or contributing articles to industry publications).
Qualifications

Capabilities and Credentials
  • Extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices within the mechanical discipline, along with a foundational understanding of other engineering disciplines.
  • Skilled in conceptualizing and developing solutions for complex systems and interactions involving diverse components.
  • Effective communicator capable of conveying project scope, timelines, and budgets to clients, colleagues, and technical teams (e.g., work plans, statements of work, and two-way communication).
  • Proficient in drafting comprehensive reports, business correspondence, and procedural documentation.
  • Equipped to analyze, troubleshoot, and mentor others; organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and collaborative.
  • Able to independently address complex challenges within the engineering discipline.
Education and Experience
  • Accredited engineering degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant industry experience is necessary.
  • Possession of a registered professional engineer (PE) license or other professional certification relevant to the area of expertise is required.
  • Experience in data center projects is essential.
