POSITION OVERVIEW

SEPTA's Contract Operations Department is actively seeking dedicated individuals for the role of part-time Transit Vehicle Operators. This position involves providing essential bus services in various locations, with a focus on community engagement and personal growth within the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate passenger vehicles while adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Stop at designated locations for passenger boarding and alighting.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles.
  • Announce stops clearly to passengers.
  • Assist passengers, including those who are elderly or disabled, in boarding and disembarking.
  • Provide information regarding bus schedules and routes.
  • Report any delays, emergencies, or incidents involving passengers.
  • Manage heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort.
  • Complete accident reports as necessary.
  • Work hours are flexible and will vary based on service requirements.
  • This part-time role allows for a maximum of 31 hours per week, with an average of 15 to 25 hours.
  • The ideal candidate should be available for a variety of shifts or consistently available for fixed periods (e.g., morning shifts or specific days each week).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED is required, along with a commitment to the mass transit field.
  • Wage rates increase consistently over the first two and a half years, reaching the top rate after 30 months (or equivalent for part-time operators).
  • Part-time operators are given priority for full-time vacancies within the department.
  • A minimum of three years of licensed driving experience is necessary.
  • No suspensions and no more than one moving violation in the past three years (valid driver's license required).
  • Must successfully complete employment history verification, a criminal background check, a medical examination including drug screening, and an interview.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, especially during the initial two years of employment.
CDL/CDL PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidates offered the position must present either a Class B or Class A Commercial License with a Passenger endorsement, with no restrictions for driving vehicles equipped with Air Brakes.
  • If lacking a CDL or permit, candidates must obtain a CDL permit (preferably Class B) no later than two weeks before the anticipated start date.
BENEFITS

Sick Leave:
  • One (1) EAH per year.
  • Ten (10) sick days from the date of hire, with an additional ten (10) sick days granted for each of the subsequent two months, and an additional ten (10) sick days for the third two months. After the first six months, employees receive an additional thirty (30) days each year thereafter.
Additional Benefits:
  • Health insurance eligibility begins the first month after completing a 60-day probation period.
  • No current prescription plan.
  • Life insurance becomes available after 90 days.
  • SEPTA Transportation Pass provides free travel on all SEPTA services.
  • Yearly uniform allowance provided in January.
