Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Patient Access Specialist to join our team at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. As a Patient Access Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring that patients receive high-quality care by efficiently and effectively managing patient access to our healthcare services.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients, responding to their questions and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Collect and verify patient demographic information, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Utilize multiple online order retrieval systems to verify or print patient orders.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefit levels through online tools or over the phone as necessary.
  • Complete accurate handoff instructions and notes to scheduling staff, noting appropriately in Epic.
  • Run real-time eligibility (RTE) on all patients to verify insurance and follow out-of-network policies as applicable.
  • Schedule patient appointments and ensure that all necessary information is collected and documented.
  • Perform medical necessity checks as necessary for scheduled services, communicating options to patients if appointment fails.
  • Inform patients of any issues with securing their financial account for their encounter.
  • Complete out-of-pocket estimations as requested by patients.
  • Provide training and education as needed to ensure that patients and staff are aware of our policies and procedures.
  • Manage work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance reviews to ensure integrity of patient data information.
  • Use effective service recovery skills to solve problems or service breakdowns when they occur.
  • Utilize department and hospital policies and procedures to complete assigned tasks.
  • Adhere to all department policies and compliance requirements.
Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years customer service or medical office experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer data-entry/typing.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic Computer Skills.
  • Ability to type 40 wpm.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional education.
  • Additional language skills.
  • Healthcare finance and/or healthcare insurance experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in a healthcare setting, especially patient scheduling and/or registration.
