Zayo is currently in search of a Telecommunications Field Specialist who will take on responsibilities related to hands-on operations within the telecommunications sector.
Our ideal Telecommunications Field Specialist possesses a solid technical, mechanical, and electrical foundation, demonstrating proficiency with various manufacturers of transport equipment, high voltage electrical systems, and DC power plants. Familiarity with critical infrastructure, ISP/OSP, and associated testing systems, including optical, electrical, and power testing equipment, is essential.
The Telecommunications Field Specialist will effectively install, test, and activate a range of telecommunications equipment such as SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, or Ethernet-based systems with minimal supervision from team leadership. Additionally, they will troubleshoot and maintain various types of equipment as outlined below.
The assigned shift may vary based on business needs and typically includes participation in an "On-Call" shift rotation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute a variety of tasks based on the requirements of the designated geographic area, operating under limited supervision.
- Engage in conference calls or meetings related to ongoing projects and processes.
- Conduct installations and commissioning, troubleshooting, and management of optical transmission systems with guidance from leadership.
- Perform OTDR, Ethernet, BER, and SONET acceptance testing.
- Complete installation, decommissioning, and troubleshooting of network and customer services.
- Provide preliminary site assessments for building entrance construction needs and equipment space availability.
- Oversee preventive and demand maintenance of the network, critical infrastructure, and materials management.
- Take ownership of understanding, learning, and implementing industry best practices for installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safeguarding the network.
- Utilize company systems and applications effectively to complete assigned tasks.
- Install, label, clean, and test fiber optic patch cords.
- Occasionally work on outside plant networks in designated markets, including metro and long-haul fibers.
- Proactively identify potential network issues and report them before they escalate into service-affecting events, including actions to resolve issues identified during routine preventative maintenance.
- Meet documented objectives and goals as defined by business needs.
- Prepare routine reports, complete documentation such as site surveys and audit reports, and communicate effectively with customers, management, peers, contractors, and other organizational members.
- Resolve problems involving multiple concrete variables in standardized situations, using deductive reasoning skills to enhance customer experience and network performance.
- Inspect cabinets, buried cables, construction sites, and other outdoor facilities in various environmental conditions.
- Work effectively in both team and individual settings.
- Utilize written communication effectively with internal and external peers daily to achieve common goals and resolve minor conflicts without management intervention.
- Read and interpret documents such as OSHA/company safety regulations, MSDS, MOPs, process and procedure documents, and vendor documentation related to company-owned equipment.
- Assist colleagues with tasks as needed.
- Act as an informal resource for less experienced Field Technicians.
- Conduct daily inspections of company-issued vehicles to ensure safe operating conditions.
- Adhere to all personal safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in on-call schedule rotation, dispatch, and overtime as required.
- Work occasional extended shifts with overnight travel as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in telecommunications technical work.
- Basic telecom and/or industry safety training is a plus.
- Must maintain eligibility to operate a company-issued vehicle per policy.
- Ability to regularly lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
