Job DescriptionWe are seeking a highly skilled Research Fellow to provide technical support for the development and implementation of Drinking Water Programs in Massachusetts. The successful candidate will work closely with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) to provide training and technical assistance to public water systems.
Key Responsibilities- Provide technical support to MassDEP regional offices and the Boston office.
- Review public water system Service Line Inventories and Lead Service Line Replacement Plans.
- Assist public water systems with identifying service lines of unknown material and implementing Lead Service Line Replacement Plans.
- Prepare applications for financial assistance, including State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan applications and federal and/or state grants.
- Assist MassDEP in developing technical guidance, procedures, and programs for future changes to PFAS regulations.
- Perform quality assurance and quality control reviews and assessments of laboratory reports.
- Assist with implementing public outreach and education efforts to engage public water systems in compliance activities.
- Review water quality results and discuss drinking water remediation options with public water systems.
- Provide data and support for research on safe drinking water in Massachusetts.
- Work with students and faculty on related research projects.
- Assist in developing training materials for public water system operator continuing education.
- Prepare reports for periodic meetings with UMass and MassDEP staff to discuss program implementation and progress.
- Respond to inquiries about technical assistance programs.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, or a related field.
- Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations, including Safe Drinking Water Act programs.
- Specific expertise in lead in drinking water, PFAS, and/or a related domain area.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with facilities, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Fully remote work with up to 60% travel within Massachusetts.
