Position Overview:

Role Summary

The City of Roanoke is in search of a skilled Horticultural Maintenance Specialist responsible for executing proficient landscape and turf care. This includes the planting, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, watering, and spraying of a diverse range of flora such as flowers, bulbs, hanging baskets, shrubs, trees, ground covers, perennials, ornamental grasses, and other plant materials. The successful candidate will also engage in mowing, weed control, edging, leaf mulching, aerating, fertilizing, and seeding of lawn areas.

The ideal applicant will be tasked with installing and renovating landscapes and turf; assisting in the transplanting and propagation of seedlings, cuttings, and plants in both greenhouse and field settings, while preparing soil as directed by a supervisor. Strong knowledge in plant identification, characteristics, and maintenance is essential. Additionally, the role involves maintaining cleanliness in parks, greenways, and green spaces by removing fallen branches, debris, and litter, as well as operating both heavy and light equipment for snow and ice removal.

Candidates should possess a foundational understanding of various mowers, industry-specific power tools, and vehicles, with the ability to perform routine maintenance and service on this equipment being preferred. The role requires the capability to learn to operate additional machinery such as front-end loaders, forklifts, bobcats, and tractors. Proficiency in word processing, record keeping, and report preparation on a computer, along with effective use of basic office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones, and mobile radios, is necessary. The ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team is also important.


Educational and Experience Requirements

An Associate's degree in horticulture, plant science, or a related field is preferred, or horticulture certification from an accredited program, or relevant experience and/or training in horticulture, landscape maintenance, or a related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Candidates must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Learner's Permit License with air brake and tanker endorsements prior to commencing work, and a full CDL license within three months. Additionally, a Registered Technician Spraying License must be obtained within three months, along with Fertilizer Applicator Certification within twelve months.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute skilled landscape maintenance tasks including planting, renovating, pruning, weeding, cleaning, mulching, watering, and fertilizing a variety of ornamental trees, shrubs, grasses, ground covers, perennials, and annuals.
  • Demonstrate strong plant identification and maintenance knowledge at various growth stages.
  • Assist in the transplanting and propagation of seedlings, cuttings, and plants in greenhouse and field settings, including soil preparation.
  • Apply pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides as directed, ensuring proper documentation is completed.
  • Conduct skilled turf maintenance including mowing, weed control, edging, aerating, fertilizing, seeding, and leaf mulching.
  • Aid in the upkeep of parks, greenways, and other city properties by removing trash, limbs, debris, and mud.
  • Perform routine minor maintenance on facilities and equipment.
  • Operate a variety of mowers, industry-specific power equipment, and vehicles.
  • Manage heavy and/or light equipment during snow and ice removal operations.
  • Assist in the setup and breakdown for city events in parks, greenways, and other properties.
  • Effectively operate basic office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones, and mobile radios.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May oversee seasonal staff as needed.
